IN SCHOOL

SUE HODGE, fourth-grade teacher at Oak Grove Elementary School, has been named Roanoke County's Teacher of the Year.

ADRIAN HOPPER, fifth-grade teacher at Clearbrook Elementary School, has been named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Scottish Rite Masons.

DEBORAH BEIRNE, fifth-grade teacher at W.E. Cundiff Elementary School, has been selected as the 1995-96 Sallie Mae Teacher of the Year for Roanoke County Schools. This award is given annually to an outstanding first-year teacher.

WILLIE WAKER, principal of Roanoke County Career Center, has been named the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year.

NORFOLK SOUTHERN CORPORATION recently awarded scholarships to two Roanoke Valley students at its annual scholarship luncheon. The students are sons or daughters of Norfolk Southern employees or retirees.

Ailee R. Steele, daughter of Gerald R. and Anna Steele, was a recipient of a Norfolk Southern Special Scholarship. Steele is a student at Northside High School.

Brian C. Simpson, son of Johnny W. and Pamela Simpson, was a recipient of an Achievement Scholarship. Simpson also attends Northside High School.

DANNY RAYMER AND AARON WALKER, students at Salem High School, won first place in the state finals of the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills National Quality Care Challenge held May 11 in Richmond. Raymer and Walker will represent Virginia in the national finals on June 17, in Washington, D.C.

Contestants for the state finals were selected via a written examination on automotive service. The state finals matched two-person teams in a timed competition to diagnose and repair an intentionally "bugged" 1996 Ford Contour.

In addition to advancing to national competition, Raymer and Walker will receive full scholarships to Ford's Automotive Service Education Training program, which includes instruction in automotive service and a paid apprenticeship at a Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership.

KRISTA TOLLEY, a ninth-grade student at William Fleming High School, won first place in the state level of the Parent, Teacher and Student Association (PTSA) Reflections competition, in the area of photography.
