|CHURCH PEOPLE| The Rev. Henry "Hank" Scoggins will end his ministry at West End Presbyterian Church on June 30. Scoggins has been pastor of the church for more than seven years. He and his wife, Melissa, will move to Portsmouth, where he will be pastor of First Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Lorraine Alston, the founding and current pastor of Deliverance Church Ministries, is being honored on the 25th anniversary of the congregation's beginning. Her call to ministry took place in Washington, D.C., in 1967, and the Roanoke congregation dates from 1971. A service Friday night at 7:30 will be led by Elder Joseph Jones of Newport, N.C. On Sunday at 10 a.m. the Rev. Willie Murray, also of Newport, N.C., will preach. Deliverance Church is at 2002 Mercer Ave. N.W.

The Rev. Freddie Fryar, formerly of King, N.C., has been named pastor of Grace and Truth Baptist Church at 3541 Orange Ave. N.E. He, his wife, Kathy, and their four children will be honored at a homecoming luncheon Sunday following the 11 a.m. service.

Rabbi Kathy Cohen has begun her work as spiritual leader of Temple Emanuel Reform Jewish congregation. The former staff member of a temple in Westport, Conn., succeeds Rabbi Frank Muller, who was called to a Youngstown, Ohio, congregation late last year.

Joseph Kennedy, director of music at South Roanoke United Methodist Church, is the new dean of the Roanoke Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Other officers are Rebecca Goodwin, sub-dean; James Leland, secretary; and Rebecca Kennedy, treasurer. The guild is a professional organization with most of its members serving on the staffs of churches.

Christi Dillon, a graduate of Roanoke College and an employee of Roanoke County schools, begins a summer internship Sunday at Vinton Baptist Church. Dillon will direct the church's programs for children through fifth grade until Aug. 15.

Kristi Porter has resigned as music director of Ridgewood Baptist Church after four years to devote more time to her family. She also teaches music at Glenvar High School. Melody Vernon will serve as interim director.

Rusten Bailey, a Virginia Tech student and member of Southview United Methodist Church, has joined the staff of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church as a summer youth intern.

King Harvey Jr. will be honored Sunday at 11 a.m. as Father of the Year at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Harvey is chairman of the deacons and a Sunday school teacher. He and his wife, Elizabeth, have three children and five grandchildren. |MUSICAL EVENTS| Bill Gaither & Friends, nationally known contemporary Christian group, will present a program June 22 at 7 p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center. Celebrate America!, an annual patriotic musical, will be presented June 30 at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in downtown Roanoke. It will feature the Chancel Choir, the Chancel Orchestra and the Promise and Rejoice groups.

Richard Kiser, performer of gospel guitar music, will present a program Sunday at 6 p.m. at Salem Wesleyan Church, 424 Chamberlain Lane, Salem. An offering will be taken.

Crimson River, performers of Southern gospel music, will be at Cathedral of Praise on Angel Lane at Hollins Friday at 7 p.m. The group was formed in 1991. |OUTREACH| Magazines for Sudan, a war-torn African nation, are being collected through Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church, 1101 Franklin Road S.W. News, science, and travel publications are usable, as well as Bibles. Donations toward shipping also are needed. Call 929-4770 for more information. |BUILDING CHANGES| Cave Spring United Methodist Church congregation has broken ground for a $2.85 million building project which has been planned for five years. It will include a 550-seat worship center with more Sunday school classrooms. J.M. Turner is contractor, with the Kerns Group the architect. John Dreiling is chairman of the building committee. The church is on Hazel Drive Southwest.

Covenant Community Church, the former First Church of God in Salem, has been dedicated at its new location on Bird Lane near Virginia 311. The church, which seats 400, was occupied earlier this year. The congregation formerly worshiped in a South Salem neighborhood. |SPECIAL EVENTS| An Old Testament Bible Class for adults will begin Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Thomas of Canterbury Anglican Catholic Church, Hershberger and Hubert Roads Northwest.

Women's Aglow, a Christian group, has scheduled Carla Karst as guest speaker Wednesday at 11 a.m. For reservations for the meal at the Airport Sheraton, call 362-4849 or 966-3891.

Unitarian-Universalists living on the north side of the Roanoke Valley have scheduled a potluck meal with worship and planning Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Gordh Room of the Hollins College Chapel. A second congregation for the valley is being considered.

Five Spiritual Traditions is the theme of a Sunday morning education series starting at 11:15 at Peace Presbyterian Church, 4365 Cloverdale Road. The life and teachings of St. Augustine, John Wesley, George Fox, St. Francis and Martin Luther will be the focus. Call 977-1821 for more information. Seven sessions remain.
