Six people, including three incumbents, have applied for four seats on the Bedford City School Board.
City Council will fill the positions on the seven-member board during its June 25 meeting. No one commented during the council's recent hearing on filling the three full terms and one unexpired term.
School Board Chairman Molly C. Thompson, Vice Chairman Diana Bare and Elizabeth Bailey, the city's representative on the Bedford County School Board, are seeking reappointment. Thompson teaches in Botetourt County, Bare is a nurse, and Bailey is a homemaker.
Dennis Blake resigned from the School Board because he moved from Bedford.
Those seeking first-time appointments are: Lois Miller, a department store manager; Debora R. Spinner, a telemarketer; and Mickey VanDerwerker, an education consultant.
In addition to naming the school board members, the council will adopt a $26 million budget June 25. The budget, which includes no increases in real estate or personal property taxes, is a maintenance budget that provides for several municipal improvement projects that are under way, City Manager Jack Gross said.
The budget will include a raise for council members, the first salary increase since 1969. Each council member will get $3,000 a year instead of the $1,200 they now earn. The vice mayor will earn $3,500, up from $1,500; and the mayor will earn $4,000, up from $1,800.
