ARNOLD, John Laurence Sr., 58, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 1996. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday, Thaxton Baptist Church. Arrangements by Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.

BLEVINS, Norman Steven, 38, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 10, 1996 at his home after a long illness. Memorial services will be held at the Shady Valley Baptist Church, Shady Valley, Tenn. at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 1996 with the Rev. Johnny Loughridge, the Rev. Larry Rye and the Rev. Luke Martin officiating. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to your local hospice organization. Steve was born in Roanoke, Virginia on April 21, 1958. The family later moved to Blacksburg, Virginia where he graduated from Blacksburg High School in 1976. Steve attended the Art Institute of Pittsburg and graduated with honors in 1978. Upon graduation, he began working with Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. His final work with Hallmark ended in June 1995 at which time he was a Senior Designer. His artwork and designs touched many lived throughout the years. Steve is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pervis E. (Phyllis and Blackie) Blevins of Blacksburg, Va.; sister, Elizabeth A. (Beth) of Blacksburg, Va.; brother and wife, Craig F. and Terry F. Blevins of Virginia Beach, Va.; niece and nephew, Kelsey A. and Tyler C. Blevins of Virginia Beach, Va.; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Forrester of Mountain City, Tenn.; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Edna S. Blevins of Shady Valley, Tenn.; and many wonderful friends, neighbors, uncles, aunts, and cousins.

BOUSMAN, Irene Eames, 75, of Martinsville, died unexpectedly Wednesday, June 12, 1996, while on vacation with her family in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Her last few days were happily spent surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, William Jake Bousman; two daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey and Kyle Matherly of Rocky Mount, and Judy and Art Campbell of Parkersburg, W.Va.; six grandchildren and their spouses, Suzanne and Graham Zollman of Lexington, Lesley Matherly, Chris and Angie Campbell of Parkersburg, W.Va., Ray and Cindy Matherly of Martinsville, Vickie and Darryl King of Rocky Mount, and Melanie and Chris Schlarb of Winston-Salem, N.C. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren, Rob and Justin Matherly, Zachary Sink, Morgan and Cody Campbell, Brittany Matherly, and Haley and Alex Schlarb. Survivors in addition include five sisters, Hazel Bousman, Mary Clark, Gladys Matherly, Louise Cundiff, Imogine Bowles; and one brother, Howard Eames. The family requests memorials be made to Trinity Baptist Church or your favorite charity. The funeral will be at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, conducted by the Rev. Terry Taylor, Rev. Mike Campbell, and Rev. Wendell Patterson. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Roselawn Chapel. The family will be at the home of William Jake Bousman at other times.

CORVIN, Ettie Robinson, 77, of Route 5, Wytheville, died Wednesday, June 12, 1996, at her residence. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Lou Corvin. She was a retired clerk for Lemons Jewelry and a lifelong member of the Evergreen United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Clay Corvin of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Louie and Mildred Corvin of Wytheville; two sisters, Cynthia Grubb, Hazel Williams, both of Wytheville; one brother, Roscoe Robinson of Wytheville; two grandchildren, Gregory and Melissa Corvin, Angela Brittain, both of Wytheville one great-granddaughter, Megan Brittain of Wytheville. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 15, 1996, at 2 p.m. in the Evergreen United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roy LaDuke officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before service time. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery, Wytheville. COVINGTON, Margaret Dorris, 79, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, June 12, 1996, at her home. She was born March 29, 1917, in Hermitage, Tenn., to the late Riley Wilson and Myrtle Wright Dorris. She was an original member of the Kitchen Kettle Band at Warm Hearth Village and a resident there for the last 12 years, a member of the VA Tech Faculty Mother's Club, and a volunteer at Montgomery Regional Hospital for many years. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Dorris and Riley Wilson Dorris Jr. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Elaine Covington and Virgil Cook, Blacksburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph Edward Sr. and Debbie Covington, Reno, Nev.; six grandchildren, Ralph Edward Covington, Jr, Stuart Parker Covington, Pamela Covington Stephens, all of Nashville, Tenn., Jennifer Elaine Covington, Columbia, S.C., Sharon Cook Babineau, Upper Marlboro, Md., William Ballard Cook II, Baton Rouge, La.; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Eva Dorris Jernigan, Madison, Tenn.; and a sister-in-law, Ellen Dorris, Nashville, Tenn. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 16, 1996, at 4:30 p.m., at Blacksburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. Don McKinney officiating. DENNIS, Claude Alexander, 77, of Pearisburg, pas sed from this earth on Wednesday evening, June 12, 1996, at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Dennis was born on August 7, 1918, in Pearisburg, a son of the late Frank Anderson and Lou Ella Stump Dennis. Mr. Dennis was a retired employee of the Giles County School System and a member of the Bluff City Methodist Church. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Theodore C. and Phyllis Dennis of Pearisburg; three daughters and sons-in-law, David and Bonnie Spangler of Salem, and Clifton and Linda Meadows and Michael and Mary Sue (``Susie"") Journell of Pearisburg; two brothers, Jack Dennis of Pearisburg and Robert C. Dennis of Roanoke; two sisters, Annie D. Earnest of Dublin and Fannie Dennis of Pearisburg; 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 1996, at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg, with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn and the Rev. David Lawson officiating. ELLER, Joseph Burton, Sr., 87, of Marion, died Thursday, June 13, 1996 at Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home. He was a dedicated life-long farmer of Smyth County and a member of the Marion Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Wygal Eller. He is survived by one daughter, Judith E. Showker of Staunton, Va.; one son, Joseph Burton Eller, Jr. of Alexander, Va. and Denver, Colorado; five grandchildren, Joseph Burton Eller III, Kara Grace Eller, Ashley June Eller, Kristen Elizabeth Showker and Aaron Edward Showker. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 16, 1996 at 2 p.m. at the Marion Baptist Church, with Dr. William A. Slater and the Rev. Kenny Price officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. GOAD, Catherine Lucas, 53, of Galax, died Wednesday, June 12, 1996 at her residence. She was born in Montgomery County November 22, 1942 to William Paul Lucas and Stella Blanche Altizer. She is survived by her husband, R. Leon Goad, Galax; two daughters and one son-in-law, Sarah Catherine Goad, Hillsville, Suzanne Marie and Keith Scott Goad, Galax; one son and daughter-in-law, William Leon and Stephanie Early Goad, Galax; two sisters, Mary Lucas Draper, Bassett and Helen Lucas Thornton, Abingdon; two granddaughters, Marina-""Elizabeth"" Catherine Venegas, Sara-""Amanda"" Maria Venegas; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the New Life Worship Center with the Rev. Leon Goad and Associate Ministers of New Life Ministries officiating. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery in Radford. HOLMES, Constance Whittier, 62, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 1996 at her home. She is the daughter of Carl H. Whittier and the late Emma A. Whittier of Topsham, Maine. In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, David W. Holmes; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Jean Whittier, Westfield, Mass; sister and brother-in-law, Lida and Paul Rosowski, Austin, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law, Marcia and Joseph Alexander, Houston, Texas, Elizabeth and David Holladay, Carol and Jim Deyerle; daughter, Susan Holmes of Roanoke; and five grandchildren. She was born in Topsham and attended Brunswick High School. A graduate of Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, she moved to Roanoke with her husband and worked as a nurse for the Headstart Program at Cloverdale Elementary School, follow by positions at the Community Hospital Emergency Room and the Roanoke Valley Medical Center for Women. She also volunteered at the Red Cross. Her favorite pastimes included travel, tennis and sewing. Services will be private, however, the family will receive friends at the Holmes residence from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 1996. JOHNSON, Wayne Mildred Martin, 87, of Fincastle, passed away Thursday, June 13, 1996 at Carriage Hill Retirement Center, Bedford, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Thomas Johnson, and a son, Everette Eugene Johnson. She is survived by da ughters and sons-in-law, Rheta and Herbert Crowder, Sue and Emanuel Spickard; son and daughter-in-law, James and Joyce Johnson; three grandsons, David Crowder, Greg Spickard, and Keith Spickard; three granddaughters, Suzanne Calvert, Angela Spickard, and Kristi Johnson; great-grandson, Cody Thomas Crowder; foster brother, Ray Smith; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 1996 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Mitchell Luckie officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. McGuire, Bessie Amos, 89, of Roanoke County, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, June 13, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. (Mickey) McGuire Sr. She is survived by four sons and daughter-in-law, William H. Jr. and Nellyce McGuire, Roanoke Co., Bobby Gene McGuire, Jackie Neal McGuire, and Jimmy Ray McGuire, all of Roanoke Co.; one daughter and son-in-law, Willa Dean and Rev. Paul Sink Sr., Roanoke Co.; one sister, Myrtle Duncan, Salem; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. MILLER, Jack, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 1996. He was born in Glade Spring to the late Hiram and Bessie Tucker Miller. He was preceded in death by his sister, Pearl Prunty. Survivors include one son, Jack Miller Jr. of Chicago, Ill.; a niece, Ann Prunty Williams of Philadelphia, Pa.; nephews, James Robert Prunty of Cl eveland, Ohio and Alfonso Williams of Philadelphia, Pa.; cousin, Josephine Hutcheson of Roanoke; several great-nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends, including Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lee of Roanoke. MURPHY, Emma Jane Mayo, of Moneta, departed this life on Saturday, June 8, 1996, in Lanham, Md. SHAFFER, Hobert S., 73, of Roanoke, died Thursday, June 13, 1996, in a Salem hospital. Surviving are his wife, Christine G. SHELOR, John Luther, 40, of Buchanan, died Wednesday, June 12, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Wenona F. Shelor, Roanoke; his mother, Helen Martin Ball, Las Vegas, Nevada; his father and stepmother, Joseph F. and Eula Shelor, Dublin; one daughter, Katherine Shelor, Roanoke; two brothers, Ronald F. Shelor, San Jose, Calif., Steven T. Shelor, Covington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 15, 1996, at 3 p.m. in the Rader Buchanan Chapel, with the Rev. Leonard L. Southern officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. STRAUB, Wesley Edward, ``Wes"", 19, of Rt. 5, Box 248, Staunton, died at 3:42 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 1996 in the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. He was born on October 17, 1976 in Waynesboro, the son of Richard L. ``Rick"" Straub and Sharon Homes Straub. Wes graduated in 1994 from Ft. Defiance High School, where he participated in football and other sports activities. He was a rising junior of Bridgewater College, where he was a member of the football team and golf team. He was an avid skeetshooter at Shenandale Gun Club. He was a member of Spring Hill Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, survivors include his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Straub of Staunton; three uncles, W. Edward Homes III of Staunton, Richard T. Homes and aunt Paula, and cousins, Amanda Jean Homes and Megan Marie Homes of Staunton, and Roger L. Straub and aunt Donna and cousin Charles Russell Straub of Monterey, Va. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William E. Homes II. A service will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday, June 15, 1996, in the Spring Hill Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Herbert T. Lewis. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Lutheran Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Matthew Coiner Altis, Erin Joseph Ball, Allen Richard Brooks, Wesley Wickline Griffin, Daniel Franklin Ritchie II, Dale Kenneth Shifflett, Andrew Clark Wheeler and Joseph Edward Wright. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Bridgewater College Football Team and 1993-1994 Ft. Defiance Varsity Football Team.
