Thanks to stable restaurant and hotel prices, a family of four can expect to take a vacation this year for the same money spent on last year's holiday, the AAA of Virginia said.
Nationally, the average cost of lodging and meals has failed to increase for only the third time in 46 years, AAA said. The association's annual vacation-cost survey indicates that a family with two adults and two children can expect to pay $193 per day, unchanged from 1995. Virginia's average daily travel costs, the same as the national average, ranks 23rd among the states this year.
Lodging will average $92 a night, down $1, and meals will cost $101, up $1. Rates for hotels and meals also were unchanged in 1994, and in 1961 they dropped slightly, AAA said.
AAA found the cheapest place to vacation is North Dakota, where a family will pay $142 per day, and the most expensive place is Hawaii, where the average stay costs $383 per day |-Staff report
