MURDER SUSPECTED IN WOMAN'S VANISHING

Local and federal officers using dogs and radar are looking for the remains of a Charlottesville woman reported missing 27 years ago.

Judy L. Hite Jones was reported missing by her father May 2, 1969. She was never found.

Police were approached in January by members of the Jones family who gave them information leading them to suspect that she was murdered, said Charlottesville police Capt. Gene Rhodenizer.

``If it is a murder, we have a number of leads,'' Rhodenizer said. ``There may be a potential suspect.''

Detectives on Thursday searched the large yard of a rental house where the woman's mother once lived. Jones was staying with her mother at the time of her disappearance. The mother has since died.

An FBI Technical Services unit was on hand with ground-penetrating radar to try and detect any buried remains. Two dogs trained to smell cadavers were also brought in.
