ATKINS, Susie Powell, 75, of Daniels, W. Va., formerly of Bruffey St., Salem, Va., died Friday morning, June 14, 1996 in a Beckley, W.Va. hospital. Surviving are her husba nd, Damon G. Atkins, Daniels, W. Va.; six sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Carol Atkins, Roanoke, Johnny Mills, Roanoke, Clyde and Joyce Mills of North Carolina, Andrew and Betty Atkins, Salem, Anthony Atkins of Dillwyn, Steve and Christine Mills, Sullivan, W. Va.; six daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Ervin Richards, Chicago, Ill., Libby and Dave White, Chattanooga, Tenn., Julia and Howard Alley, Daniels, W. Va., Betty Shaver, Roanoke, Diane and John McNeil, Montvale, Gracie and Billy Conner, Salem; 38 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mazie Coleman and Flora Rash, both of Salem. Graveside funeral services 2 p.m. Sunday in the Cannaday Cemetery, Floyd, Va., with Mr. Mitchell Floyd officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd.

CHRISLEY, Oreta Craig, 92, of Ceres, died Thursday, June 13, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Pulaski , the daughter of the late Elliott Craig and Annie Quesenberry. She was a member of the Jordon's Chapel United Methodist Church in Pulaski, and was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence E. Chrisley. She is survived by two daughters, Annie C. Peery of Ceres, Doris C. Hildreth of North Port, Ala.; a son, David B. Chrisley of Centreville; a sister, Hazel C. Tickle of Pulaski; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one stepgreat-grandchild. Graveside service and interment will be held Sunday, June 16, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Draper Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the pastor, Frank Lyerly, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Newberry Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 75, Bastian, Va. 24314. Flowers are also welcomed. Newberry Funeral Home in Bland is in charge of the arrangements.

COX, Edgar Lee, 71, of Roanoke, died Friday, June 14, 1996. He was a member of Windsor Hills Baptist Church and was one of the co-founders of CMT Sporting Goods. He served as president of the Roanoke Valley Bowling Association from 1966-1972 and in May of 1993, was inducted into the Roanoke Valley Association's Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor E. Cox; his children and their spouses, Michael L. and Elena Cox, Los Angeles, Ca., Steven Cox, of Roanoke, Carolyn and Patrick Greer, Salem, Martha C. and James Preston Thompson, of Sterling, Va., David S. and Peggie Cox, Roanoke, and his adopted daughter, Gypsi Aleshire, Salem; grandchildren: Michael, Nathan, Angela, Tony, Eddie, Jessica, Teresa, Alex, Marlena, and Jennafer; two great-grandchildren Caitlyn and Lauren; two sisters, Jean Davis, Boones Mill and Frances Stringer, Fla.; one brother, Gary Cox, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday June 17, 1996 at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with the Rev C. Lawrence Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. DEHART Van Richard, 52, of Salem, passed away Friday, June 14, 1996. He is survived by his son and daughters, Richard Allen DeHart, Marla Dawn DeHart, Michelle DeHart, Sonya Renee DeHart, Tonya Denee DeHart; twelve grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Dottie Wiltshire, Joyce Hale, Shirley Jenkins, Wayne DeHart, Jimmy DeHart. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, June 17 at the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem with Rev. G. F. Westmoreland, Jr. Interment will follow at Butts Cemetery. DOOLEY, Jack Edward, 41, of Troutville, passed away suddenly Thursday, June 13, 1996, while vacationing in Emerald Isle, N.C. He was employed by Catawba Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall (Jack) Dooley and Elsie Rebecca Dooley. Survivors include his devoted and loving wife, Glenda Rose Dooley; a son, Derek; a daughter, Erica, both of the home; a sister, Janet Teaford, Roanoke; also a host of aunts and sp ecial friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, June 17, 1996, from the Lotz Salem Chapel. The Rev. Loraine Taylor and the Rev. Troy Webb will officiate. GEORGE, Roscoe Franklin, 92, of Radford, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 1996, at his home. He was a charter member of Central United Methodist Church in Radford, where he taught the Men's Sunday School Class for several years. He was a lover of all sports, having signed a contract to play baseball with the Detroit Tigers when he was 17 years old. He participated in city-wide tennis tournaments and played church league softball. During his business career he was responsible for opening Rose's 5 & 10 cent stores. Mr. George retired from Mitchell Wholesale Hardware Sales in 1979. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances George. He is survived by two daughters, Frances George Reed, Dallas, Texas and Andrea George Stimpson, Radford; four grandchildren, Ken Hine, Cris Hine-Wark, Andrew Stimpson and Samuel Stimpson; five great-grandchildren, Emma Hine, Jessie Frances Hine, Sarah Jane Hine, Laura Lee Stimpson, and George Austin Wark; one sister, Agnes George Daniels, Denton, N.C. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 16, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry Horton and the Rev. Warren Wattenbarger officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Burial Park in Radford. The family will receive friends at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.

GOODE, Nellie Nichols, 91, of Huddleston, passed away Friday, June 14, 1996, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born May 29, 1905, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Samuel Nichols and Sally Mitchell Nic hols. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Davis Goode; and a son, Arthur Wilton Goode. She was a member of the Palestine Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, Jessie Calvin Goode, Spartenburg, S.C.; a daughter, Hilda G. Fowler, Chesterfield; a foster brother, Raleigh Overstreet, Moneta; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, June 16, 1996, at 2 p.m. from the Palestine Baptist Church by the Rev. Christopher Fowler. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. HARRISON, Dora Lee, 93, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, June 14, 1996. She was born on July 20, 1902. She is survived by one sister, Helen Brammer, of Roanoke; three grandsons; several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday June15,1996 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Rev. David F. Eppling officiating. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel.

HEDRICK, Gladys Virginia Reynolds, 86, of Richmond, formerly of New Castle, died Tuesday, June 11, 1996 in a Richmond nursing home. She is survived by one brother, Ira Edward Reynolds, of New Castle; one sister, Marcelene Streever, of Richmond; several cousins. Their will be a graveside service Sunday June 16th 2 p.m. at Huffman Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Boitnott Funeral Home.

HIGGINS, Brownlee McDowell, 79, of Lexington, died at his home Friday, June 14, 1996. He was born in Rockbridge County July 4, 1916, son of the late Willie Higgins and Kate Smith Higgins. He was p receded in death by a son, Harry McDowell Higgins. He was a member of the Ebenezer A.R.P. Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary A. Higgins; four sons, Charles Melvin Higgins Sr. of Buena Vista, Carl Edward Higgins, Clifford Daniel Higgins, and Kenneth W. Higgins Sr., all of Lexington; two daughters, Mary Ann Ramsey and Ruth Olive Horne, both of Lexington; three brothers, Paul Higgins and Raymond Higgins of Lexington, and Richard Higgins of Arcola; one sister, Gladys Staton of Lexington; 25 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Dean Staton officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at home.

HOLLAND, Leonard Cecil. 85, of Roanoke, died Friday, June 14, 1996. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel.

LESTER, Dr. John Gambill Jr., 70, of Salem, passed away Thursday, June 13, 1996. He was a graduate of Chicago School of Chiropractic and had practiced for over 30 years in the Roanoke Valley and in Florida six years prior to coming to Roanoke. He earned his degree from the Virginia Chiropractic Association and was former president of the Council on Nutrition. He had earned his diplomate in Council on Nutrition. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and also a Shriner. He is survived by his wife, Reba A. Lester; one son and daughter-in law, John G. Lester III and wife, Michele, of Richmond; daughter and son-in-law, Ann Patterson Barnard and husband, Frank, of Fincastle; stepdaughters, Janet Faye Jones and husband, Duane, of Phoenix, Ariz., Edith Loraine Grello and husband, Mark, of Bowie, Md., Linda J. Wagner and husband, Mark, of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren; one sister, Lorine Ellis, of Lakeland, Fla. Graveside services will be held 12 noon Monday, June 17, 1996, at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. The Rev. Billy White will officiate. SHEPPARD, Ethel Nancy, 93, of Walnut Cove, N.C., formerly of Christiansburg, died Friday, June 14, 1996, in North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ernest Sheppa rd; two daughters, Norma Jean Stouts, Gladys Hale; and one son, Alfred Lee Sheppard. Surviving are her children, Earl J. Sheppard, Walnut Cove, N.C., Leathia Wood, Germanton, N.C., Harold J. Sheppard, Parrott, Helen Jones, Nora Bell Cromer, both of Blacksburg, Jackie Sheppard, Dublin, Corola Blankenbeckler, Palmyra, Roy Sheppard, Christiansburg; one brother, Richard Hutchison, Christiansburg; 57 grandchildren; 96 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. STRICKLER, Leo Kent, (``Red""), 77, of Salem, departed this life Thursday, June 13, 1996. He was retired from Norfolk and Western Railroad and was a veteran of World War II. His survivors include his wife, Nellie ``Pat"" Hodges White Strickler, Salem; two sons, Michael Kent Strickle r, Craig Co., Mark Allen Strickler of California; daughter, Vicki Lynn Strickler Shockley, Bedford; brother, Eugene F. Strickler, Fincastle; stepdaughter, Jean White Thompson and husband, Wes of Roanoke; stepson, R. Wayne White and wife, Gail of Fayetteville, Ga.; three grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren. SWAIN, James P. (``Kelly''), 88, of Vinton, died in a local nursing home Friday, June 14, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Abbott Swain; his father, James Swain; mother, Etta Pedigo Swain; four sisters and three brothers. He was a member of the Vinton Baptist Church and the Berean Men's Sunday School Class. He is survived by two nephews, Mr. Carl Moore, Waynesboro, Mr. Don Abbott, Roanoke; two nieces, Mrs. James (Mary Lou) Webb, Roanoke, Mrs. Herb (Dixie) Snyder, Vinton; a special niece, Mrs. Bobby (Faye) Miller, Vinton; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Edward (Beulah) Swain; two special cousins, Mr. Montague Swain, Miss Grace Neighbors, both of Vinton; several great-nieces and great-nephews.
