BLACKSBURG - This summer, the Lyric Theater on College Avenue in downtown Blacksburg will offer matinees for children on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. The cost is $2. The schedule is as follows:

FFA convention

BLACKSBURG - More than 1,000 members of the Virginia Future Farmers of America Association will attend the association's 70th annual convention from June 25-28 at Virginia Tech.

Middle and high school students from 170 chapters throughout the state will participate in career development events that include computer applications, nursery and landscape, public speaking, agricultural sales and small animal care. Local chapters will be recognized for achievements during the year in areas such as public relations, membership and community projects.

Two new events will be offered. An agricultural issues forum will allow students to research an agricultural issue of their choice, make a presentation stating their position on the issue and answer questions from judges. A marketing event will allow students to develop a marketing plan for a product or service and have the plan evaluated by judges.

FFA chapters in high school and middle schools promote agricultural education. The nationwide organization was founded at Virginia Tech in 1925 and now has more than 444,400 members.

Poetry contest

DUBLIN - New River Community College's 18th Annual Poetry Contest for Senior Citizens is accepting entries.

Men and women who are at least 60 years of age are eligible. Poems must be original, never before published and a maximum of 60 lines long. The name and address of the writer must be included on each entry. The limit is three poems per person.

The deadline for entries is July 31, 1996.

Eight winners will be selected from poets that reside in the counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski or the City of Radford are eligible. One winner will be chosen from poems submitted by persons living outside of the region. An awards reception will be held in September for poets, their families and friends. Winners will receive a plaque and a booklet of all poems submitted to the contest.

Elderhostels at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG - Two Elderhostels will be held concurrently from July 21 through July 26 at Virginia Tech. and each will focus on three topics. The topics and instructors for the first Elderhostel are: "The American Civil War: A Nation in Conflict," Bud Robertson; "The Art and Business of Show Business: Broadway and Beyond," Tony Distler; and "The Myers Briggs Indicator In Our Lives: How to Improve Relationships," Judith Jones.

Topics and instructors for the second Elderhostel are: "Step on the Self-Esteem Elevator, It's Going Up!" Howard Feiertag; "Historic Costumes as Makers of Our History and Our Values," Valerie Giddings; "Technology and Modern Existence-How Material Reshape Our Lives," Jerry Gibbs, Ron Kander, and Ron Gordon.
