CELBRATIONS - ANNIVERSARIES

Faires anniversary

50 years ago the marriage of Frank (Letch) Faires, Jr., and Cleo Shepherd was tied together by a ribbon of God's love. The couple was married June 1, 1946. Mr. Faires, a former native of Bedford Co., retired from Structural Steel Co. Mrs. Faires retired from Halmode Apparel. The couple was honored with a dinner at the ``Home Place Restaurant'', followed by a reception at the home of Ethan and Hattie Rogers. Others hosting the event John and Lucy Graybill, John and Louise Barger, Jock and Eleanor Rocchi, Gladys Graybill, all members of Hollins Road Baptist Church, where the couple have been active members for more than 35 years, also Sandy, Jerri and Betty Webster from Fairmont Baptist. Howard anniversary

Mr. & Mrs. Waller Lane Howard celebrated their 50th anniversary on June 16, 1996. The reception was held at Northminster Presbyterian Church and was hosted by their children, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Krueger and Mr. & Mrs. W. Kim Howard. The couple was married June 13, 1946 at New Monmouth Presbyterian Church, Lexington, Va. They have resided in Roanoke 49 years. Mrs. Howard is the former Rose Marie Engleman. They have two children, Joy of Huntington Beach, California and Kim of Hickory, N.C., four grandchildren, Beth K. and David Howell, Brian Krueger, Adam Howard and Amanda Howard. Mr. Howard is retired from Roanoke City Schools. Mrs. Howard is a homemaker and retired teacher. Their anniversary trip will be a tour of the Northwest National parks of the U.S. and Canada.

Getman anniversary

Andy and Bertha Getman celebrated their 50th anniversary June 15, 1996. The celebration was held at the Hotel Roanoke and was hosted by their sons. The couple was married June 15, 1946, at the Methodist Church, Dillonvale, Ohio. They have lived in Roanoke for 26 years, having moved from St. Clairsville, Ohio. Mrs. Getman is the former Bertha P. DeYarmon. The couple has two sons, Ronald W., Columbia, S. C., and Donald D., Roanoke; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Mr. Getman is retired former Senior Director Labor Relations N&W Railway Co. Mrs. Getman is a homemaker. They are members of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church. Out-of-town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Getman, Columbia, S. C., Mr. and Mrs. William DeYarmon, St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Mary and Otto Muller, Long Island, N. Y., and grandchildren, Adam, Toddy, Holly and Drew.

Hammond anniversary

Clayton and Annette Hammond celebrated their 50th anniversay on Saturday, May 25, 1996. The celebration was held at Hotel Roanoke. They were married May 25, 1946 in Danvers, Mass.

She's the former Annette Meigs. Before her marriage, Mrs. Hammond was employed at a milinery store and as secretary to her father who was an instructor at Essex County Agriculture School in Hathorne, Mass.

They have 2 children; 4 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hammond has been a lay reader in the Episcopal Church and an active Mason for 60 years. Mrs. Hammond has been a member of the Presbyterian Choir for 50 years.

Out of state guests attending the celebration included their granddaughter, husband & great-grandchildren from West, Virginia.

Lewis anniversary

Mr. Jessie L. and Mrs. Elizabeth V. Lewis celebrated their 50th anniversary on June 15, 1996. The celebration was held at Day's Inn, Airport, and was hosted by their children. The couple was married June 18, 1946 in Roanoke. They are lifelong residents of Roanoke. She's the former Elizabeth Elaine Vineyard. They have 4 children; 9 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Reynolds anniversary

Douglas and Lois Reynolds celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on May 19, 1996, in the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, Va. It was hosted by their sons and their spouses.

The couple were married on May 21, 1946 in Pembroke Methodist Church. Mrs. Reynolds, the former Lois Lorraine Johnston of Ripplemead, Va., is retired from Federal Farm Programs ASCS. Mr. Reynolds is retired from Select-O-Mat, Inc. of Virginia.

They have two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Douglas and Sara Reynolds of Newport, Va., and C. William (Billy) and Rhonda Reynolds of Christiansburg, Va. Also, 4 grandchildren, Lance and Lindsay Reynolds of Christiansburg, Va. and Alison and Scott Reynolds of Newport, Va.

Many friends, relatives & out-of-town guests attended the lovely celebration. Music played during the celebration was tapes of famous dance bands of the Forties by DJ Rick Kenley of ``Unlimited Sounds''.

Fifty years ago, the couple spent a night at Hotel Roanoke and had kept their receipt. Following the 50th celebration, they were guests at Hotel Roanoke, for the same cost per night, ($7.00).

Carner anniversary

Richard C. and Thelma F. Carner of Roanoke, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They were married June 8, 1946 in Roanoke. Mr. Carner is retired from Associated Transport Trucking Co. Mrs. Carner is the former Thelma Foutz of Bedford County. They are both members of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. The couple enjoyed a trip to Natural Bridge, Va., where they spent their honeymoon 50 years ago. A reception was hosted by their two daughters and sons-in-law, on June 9, 1996, in the Church Social Hall. The couple also have four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Reece anniversary

The 50th wedding anniversary of Warren G. and Effie Walker Reece was celebrated June 16, 1996 with a reception given by their children and spouses, Paul and Lynn Reece and Lois R. and Allen Deisher. The Reeces were married June 22, 1946 in War, W.Va. Natives of Dugspur, Va. and War, W.Va., they have lived in Roanoke since 1955.

Mr. Reece is retired from Macke Vending Co. and now farms part-time. Mrs. Reece is a retired Miller and Rhodes hairdresser. Both are active members of Stonewall Primitive Baptist Church in Floyd. Their spare time is occupied by their grandchildren, Aaron, David, and Elizabeth Reece, and Timothy Deisher. Also, one black dog, Billy.

Tuck anniversary

William H. and Dorothy S. Tuck celebrated their 50th anniversary on June 12, 1996. The couple was married June 12, 1946, in Pineview Methodist Church, Vicker, Va., by Rev. Sam Stanley. Mrs. Tuck is the former Dorothy Mae Sheppard. The couple's children are Richard, Churubusco, Ind., Nathan, Pulaski, Va., and Reginald, Midlothian, Va. They have six grandchildren and are expecting their first great-grandchild on June 12. Mr. Tuck is retired from N & W and is currently employed by Republic Parking. Mrs. Tuck is employed as a floral designer. They are members of Cave Spring Methodist Church. A family celebration is planned for July.

Hooker anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Hooker are celebrating their 70th anniversary on June 16, 1996. The celebration is being held at the home of grandson, Don Chappelear and wife Pam of Roanoke, Va. The couple was married June 16, 1926, in Sheffield, Alabama. They are formerly of Covington, Va., and now reside in Roanoke, Va. Mrs. Hooker is the former Evelyn Presby of Florence, Alabama. Their children are Betty J. Chappelear, Roanoke, Va., and Dorothy Guyton, Hagerstown, Md. They have eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Hookers was employed by Barr-Topham, Covington, and Leggett, Portsmouth, Va. Mrs. Hooker is a mother and homemaker. Two children, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren attended the celebration.

Smith anniversary

Samuel E. Smith and Ocie E. Smith celebrated their 50th anniversary on May 25, 1996. The celebration was held at Troutville Town Hall. It was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Roberts. The couple was married February 8, 1946, in Roanoke. They have lived in Roanoke for 50 years. Mrs. Smith is the former Ocie Elree Slusher, Floyd, Va. The couple's children are Wally, Roanoke, Warren, Martinsville, and Linda, Roanoke. They have six grandchildren. Mr. Smith is retired from Associated Transport and Mrs. Smith is employed by K-Mart.

Crowe 30th anniversary

Kermit Corbin Crowe, Salem, and Alva Sue Taylor, New Castle, Va., were married June 4, 1966, in Roanoke.

They had two sons, Teddy Dwayne and Thomas Corbin. Thomas (Tommy) is deceased.

A surprise pot luck dinner was hosted by son Teddy and wife Susan, sister Larine and husband Arnold Wheeler, Saturday, June 1, 1996, at the Wheeler's residence.

The couple will also celebrate with a trip to Hawaii. Kermit and Sue are both employed at General Electric.

Blades anniversary

Bill and Betty Blades celebrated their 50th anniversary on June 16, 1996. The couple were married June 16, 1946 in Chillicothe, Missouri. They have three children, Bob a nd Sue Ann Blades, Roanoke, Debbie and Robert Reid, Roanoke, and Steve and Joy Blades, Wirtz. They have eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Blades is retired from Norfolk and Western Railway
