There's little left of a 23-foot boat reported stolen from Smith Mountain Lake Saturday morning.
Serina Walker of Penhook and Jerry Shaver of Roanoke had planned to take their boat out, but it was missing from the dock in Bedford County where they kept it. A neighbor last saw the craft Wednesday, said Lt. Karl Martin of the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
The boat had been driven to a spot about five miles away in Franklin County, Martin said. The boat apparently caught fire after being hot-wired or was set afire.
The scattered remains were found in shallow water, and most of the fiberglass hull had been destroyed, Martin said.
The boat was worth an estimated $14,000.
