TRACK STARS ACHIEVE TOP NATIONAL STATUS

Two William Fleming and three Patrick Henry high school athletes were named All-Americans after their performances during the weekend at the USAir National Scholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Raleigh, N.C.

Fleming's Fenn Crutchfield finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 4 inches to earn the honor, while the Patriots' Raheem Barnwell finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles.

Barnwell teamed with fellow Patrick Henry athletes Louis Booker and Rashawn Akers and Fleming's Brent Elliott to place fifth in the sprint medley relay in 3 minutes, 36.99 seconds.

The top eight finishers in each event earned All-America status.

In other sports news in the region:

nIan Spooner scored in the 56 minute Sunday to give the Roanoke RiverDawgs a 1-0 victory over the Washington (D.C.) Mustangs at Montgomery High School in Rockville, Md.

The victory was a team-record third in a row for the RiverDawgs, and it came in a game that was called with six minutes remaining when the stadium lights went out.

The lone goal came after Spooner controlled a 70-yard goal kick by goalie Aaron Ewert, took the ball downfield and scored from 12 yards.

Ewert made seven saves in earning his first shutout for Roanoke.

nOld Dominion won the 18th annual Virginia Sports Information Director's Association state survey by winning .641 of its Division I intercollegiate athletic contests.

Virginia finished second overall in the team standings with a .587 winning percentage and Virginia Tech (.544) was sixth.

ODU led all 12 Division I schools in men's percentage at .652. Virginia Commonwealth finished second with .632. UVa (.626) finished third, and Virginia Tech (.606) was fifth.

In the women's competition, ODU finished first with a .627 percentage. William and Mary finished second, at .583. UVa (.548) and Virginia Tech (.483) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
