Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the New River Valley is participating in a nationwide fund-raising project that allows owners of old cars to donate them for tax deductions.
Cars For Kids' Sake is only about 10 weeks old, and already Big Brothers/Big Sisters chapters across the country are reaping the benefits. A chapter in Rhode Island has received $1,000 from the sale of three cars, and a chapter in Oakland, Calif., received $800 from two cars.
Connie Kriz, executive director of the New River Valley chapter, is hoping the pipeline soon will start flowing for her. The money from cars donated by people in the valley will go to the local chapter, she said.
Funds will go to the New River Valley chapter's programs, including two pilot programs: one for school-based kids in Blacksburg's elementary schools and one for special-needs kids.
Under the program, donors may receive tax deductions. The vehicle will be picked up from the donor and sold at auction or to a salvage dealer. Big Brothers/Big sisters will received the proceeds, less sales tax, vendor fees and towing charges.
For more information, call the local chapter at 381-0662.
