The Consumer Price Index, the government's main measure of inflation, rose 0.3 percent in May and stands at 156.6 points. That compares with 156.3 at the end of April and 152.2 at the end of May 1995.
The figure means a collection of goods and services that cost $152.20 a year ago carried a price tag of $156.60 at the end of last month, a gain of 2.89 percent over the year's time.
If the government still used 1967 prices as the index base of 100, instead of using an average of prices in 1982-84, the index would stand at 469.0 points, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That means that goods that cost $100 in 1967 would have cost $469 at the end of May.
