Coal production on the rise

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Domestic coal production rose 6 percent to 19.8 million tons during the week ended June 8 from 18.7 million tons the previous week, the Department of Energy said Monday.

The previous week included the Memorial Day holiday.

The U.S. coal industry produced 18 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration.

Virginia mines produced 700,000 tons of coal during the survey week, up from 621,000 tons the previous week and 687,000 tons a year ago.

Domestic coal production so far this year is about 452 million tons, slightly behind last year's production at this time. |- Associated Press

State commission

drops phone toll

The State Corporation Commission has approved an extended calling plan that will eliminate telephone toll charges between Citizens Telephone Cooperative's Ballard exchange in Floyd County and Sprint-Centel's Meadows of Dan Exchange in Patrick County.

Ballard customers with residential flat-rate service will see a monthly increase in their phone bills of $2.69 when the plan goes into effect July 1. The bills of Meadows of Dan customers will increase by 73 cents a month.
