In addition, several students were recognized for their artwork.

Each year, an artwork created by a student is selected to become part of a permanent collection of artwork at Falling Branch Elementary. Artwork by second-grader Adrienne Kingman has been chosen as the selected piece.

Two other Falling Branch Elementary students were winners of the Mathematics Awareness Week poster contest sponsored by the Virginia Tech Department of Mathematics. The winners were third-grader Mallory Brame and her brother Jameson Brame, a fourth-grader.

Three area students were winners in the 1996 Wildflower Picture Contest sponsored by the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. The contest was open to all students and had the theme of "Celebrating Wildflowers." The winners are:

Hannah Glasson of Margaret Beeks Elementary received first place at the first-grade level.

Lulu Ma of Margaret Beeks Elementary received honorable mention in the first-grade level.

Susie Frasca of Gilbert Linkous Elementary received first place at the second-grade level.

TEACHER RECOGNITIONS

Blacksburg High School teacher Linda Hinson recently was recognized by the Blacksburg Area Branch of the American Association of University Women as Educator of the Year. The association recognized Hinson because she "celebrates the identity of her female students, connects female students to caring adults, empowers female students to realize their dreams and ensures the participation and success of female students in their education."

Hinson is an art teacher at Blacksburg, where she has worked for nine years. She also is sponsor of the Women's Studies club.

Hinson received two $100 checks, one to use personally and one to spend at the high school, which she will use to help establish a women's center at the school.

Teacher Peggy Sue Plum recently received a certification of recognition by the New River Valley Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children. Plum is a special education teacher at Dalton Intermediate School in Radford. The certificate recognizes her contributions to the education of exceptional children and youth in the area during the past school year.

Plum has initiated several new programs to enhance the learning atmosphere for students in her classes. In April, she presented the curriculum for her Math Lab 2000 class at the National School Board Association Fair of Excellence in San Francisco. She also has presented programs at several other conferences.

Plum has taught in Radford for nine years and is the immediate-past president of the Radford Education Association.
