School census

CHRISTIANSBURG - Montgomery County School Public Schools will conduct a school census through July 15. The statewide census is mandated by law. Results determine the distribution of one percent of state sales tax funds which are returned to localities for school division use.

Census takers will count all children ages 5 through 19, using door-to-door canvassing to complete the survey. Parents will be asked to provide the name, age and birthdate of every child in the family.

The census takers will have ID badges and a letter from the superintendent. The school division's funding is directly related to the thoroughness of the census. so citizen cooperation in collecting data is important.

For more information about the census in Montgomery County, call Judith B. Rutherford, director of student services, at the School Board office at 382-5100.

International friends

BLACKSBURG - The Cranwell International Center at Virginia Tech needs people to be a friend to an international student or family as part of the International Friendship Program.

The center matches local residents with international students. The host does not provide housing or financial assistance, but students may be invited to participate in family activities.

There is an opportunity to learn about other cultures and to form friendships with people from other nations. Retired couples, couples with no children remaining at home, young couples, single people and families with children of all ages have participated in the program.
