AEP PLANS REVAMP AT OLD POWER PLANT $7.7 MILLION PROJECT SCHEDULED AT GLEN LYN

American Electric Power Co. said Tuesday it will spend $7.7 million on a major renovation of the the No.5 unit at its Glyn Lyn power plant in Giles County.

The project is intended to extend the life of the 95 megawatt unit, which went into operation in 1944, the company said. It is the oldest steam-generating power unit in AEP's seven-state system.

The unit's turbine, generator, main steam piping and precipitators will be replaced or undergo major renovation. The work, to begin in the fall, will also include maintenance on other equipment.

The new components will allow the unit to operate according to its original design with increased generating capacity and efficiency, said Brad Jones, energy production manager at Glyn Lyn.

Last year, the plant's two units generated 1.5 million megawatt hours of electricity, burning 601,000 tons of coal mined in Virginia. The plant's unit No.6, which went into operation in 1957, has a generating capacity of 240 megawatts.
