IN SCHOOL

PATRICK HENRY HIGH SCHOOL announced the following team winners from the state Vocational Industrial Clubs of America Skill Olympics and Leadership contest held in Virginia Beach: Christine Owsley, Erica Robertson, Kellie Tidrow and Becky Zook won first place in the Health Occupation Quiz Bowl; Amy Keene, Laura Paige, Aaron Galbreath and Drew Guelzow won first place in the VICA Quiz Bowl.

The VICA Quiz Bowl Team will advance to the National VICA U.S. Skills Olympics in Kansas City that begins Sunday.

VICA is an organization that prepares students for futures in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations.

ROANOKE BRANCH OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN awarded its annual scholarship at the May meeting. This year's recipient is Anh Nguyen, a 1996 graduate of Salem High School, who will attend Virginia Western Community College this fall.

The Roanoke branch also recognized its oldest member, Martha Bell. Bell, a longtime AAUW member and retired schoolteacher, turned 102 in February.

In its March meeting, the AAUW announced that Susan Kennedy, calculus teacher at the Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science and Technology, is the Roanoke AAUW Teacher of the Year for 1995-1996. Kennedy was also named Virginia AAUW State Teacher of the Year for 1995-1996 at the state AAUW Convention in Richmond. Kennedy was recognized as a positive role model for the girls in her classroom, and for her encouragement of girls' achievement in math, science, and technology.

GAMMA ALPHA CHAPTER OF OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY INC. held its annual Talent Hunt program in March at the YMCA Family Youth Center on Orange Avenue. This year the program was held jointly with the Rho Iota Chapter of Danville. The National Talent Hunt will be held in Los Angeles, Calif.; winners in the district competitions will compete there.

The winner was Shana Waller. Waller, daughter of Thomas and Janis Waller, attends Patrick Henry High School and Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Mathematics and Science. She won first place for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in a monologue.

Kianna Price, daughter of Charles and Anita Price, was first runner-up in voice and will perform at the district competition if the first-place contestant is unable to perform. Price, an alto singer, performed "Vision of a Sunset," composed by Shawn Stockman. Hill is a senior at Patrick Henry High School.

Renea M. Hill, daughter of Debra Hill, was second runner-up. Hill performed "Amazing Grace," composed by John Newton, on the piano. Hill also is a senior at Patrick Henry High School.

The members of the local Talent Hunt program are Robert Sparrow, Chairman; Bill Board; John Brown; Ernest Garner; William Keen; Joseph Sparrow; H.P. Dunlap, western area supervisor, and Ron Hairston, assistant area supervisor/Rho Iota chapter. The judges for the program were Frances Keen, Edith Morgan and Stephanie Swain.

MONA CANCINO, daughter of Juanita Mazzawi, is the winner of the Richard E. Morgan-Sons of the American Revolution Essay Contest. Cancino, a student at William Fleming High School, will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond as an award for her essay.

ELIZABETH CLARK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Clark Sr. of Roanoke, has been awarded the Academic Achievement Scholarship at Cedarville College in Ohio for the 1996-1997 academic year.

A 1996 graduate of Roanoke Valley Christian School, Clark plans to study elementary education in college.

BEN LINKOUS, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Linkous of Salem, has been selected as a recipient of a $5,300 academic scholarship for the 1996-1997 academic year at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga.

He is a 1996 graduate of Glenvar High School.

SANDRA L. CARROLL, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Carroll of Roanoke, has been awarded a University Challenge Grant from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.

WILLIAM KIRKLAND ROYSTER, son of Dr. and Mrs. R. Lewis Royster Jr. of Roanoke, recently graduated from the Blue Ridge School. He plans to attend the College of Charleston.

The Blue Ridge School is a college preparatory boarding school for young men outside of Charlottesville.

CAVE SPRING HIGH SCHOOL PTSA recently honored 26 students who have performed more than 2,500 hours of community service in the past year. The students are: Marissa Addy, Haana Ali, Jonathan Amos, Alpa Arora, Amanda Asbury, Hunter Atkinson, Amer Buckowsky, Jason Brubaker, Leslie Burdett, Shannon Cox, Brad Cullinan, Bradd Edmondson, Jennifer Fickler, Jacob Hawkins, Maneesh Jain, Jennifer Jenkins, Allison Lacombe, Tiffany Love, Michael Moran, Peter Nevin, Alison Shaffer, Erika Shernoff, David Saunders, Kelly Thorne and Amber Willmott.

WOODBERRY FOREST SCHOOL, a college preparatory school for boys in Madison County, recently announced the graduation of two Roanoke-area students, Christopher Herring Hancock, son of Kathleen McMillen Tate of Roanoke and William H. Hancock of Union, W.Va.; and Joshua Arthur Points, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Arthur Points of Roanoke. Both young men plan to attend the University of Virginia in the fall.

TAYLOR L. JONES, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Jones of Roanoke, was recently awarded a Visual Arts Merit Scholarship for the 1996-97 school year from the North Carolina School of the Arts where Jones is a rising college freshman in their School of Design and Production.

PATRICK HENRY HIGH SCHOOL recently recognized several students for their achievements in the fields of mathematics and science.

Carolyn Hodges was awarded the Rensselaer Medal from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. This medal is awarded to a junior selected by his or her school as the top student in science and mathematics. Recipients are eligible for scholarship money if they enroll in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.

Daniel Daum was awarded the school's top science award, and is eligible for scholarship money if he enrolls in the University of Rochester in New York.

AMERICAN ELECTRIC POWER will award scholarships to students who show promise in math, science and technology. Recipients were selected by school faculties and staff on general guidelines provided by the power company. The following students will receive the 1996 AEP scholarships:

Allison Suggs, who attended Patrick Henry High School and the Roanoke Valley Governor's School of Science and Technology, $1,250. She plans to attend Virginia Tech.

Stacie A. Crumpacker, a 1996 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, $500. She will attend Virginia Tech this fall.

Gerald DeMasters, a 1996 graduate of Salem High School, $500. He will attend The College of William and Mary.

James M. Huffman, a 1996 graduate of Craig County High School, $250. He will attend Cornell University.

NORTH CROSS SCHOOL recently announced the appointment of Stephen R. Parnes as director of the middle school.

Parnes comes to North Cross from the John Cooper School near Houston, Texas, where he was dean of students.

BRIAN BENNETT, a graduating senior at Salem High School, recently received the R. Franklin Hough Jr. Alumni Scholarship Award from Virginia Baptist Children's Home and Family Services at the annual VBCH&FS Achievement Banquet.
