OLD LANDFILL SITE MAY SEE SOME ENTERTAINING CHANGES

A dead landfill will be brought back to life in a useful activity if Vinton Town Council member Billy Obenchain has his way.

Obenchain has visions of a go-cart track or similar activity on the 15-acre tract on Third Street near Hardy Road.

"It's worthless now, just growing up in weeds," he said at a Town Council meeting Tuesday.

He believes the old landfill, closed for about 25 years, is a good site for recreational development.

Obenchain proposed that the town seek a private developer to lease the land from the town and convert it into recreational use.

Mayor Charles Hill and other council members wanted a better idea of what kind of activity could be conducted there, and asked for a report on how the property might be used. Town Manager Clay Goodman said he would seek ideas from other municipal leaders.

On another matter, members of council objected to a proposal by Roanoke County to move the North Vinton Precinct polling place from the Fire Department to the second floor of Vinton Baptist Church. They asked the county to find a ground-level site.

Obenchain said no second floor is a suitable spot for a voting place.
