MOON RISES OVER WYOMING

ROANOKE NATIVE Lee Moon leaves Marshall to become Wyoming's AD.

Roanoke native Lee Moon was hired as athletic director at Wyoming on Wednesday, ending a seven-month search for a replacement for Paul Roach, who had been the school's football coach and AD.

Dan Viola, an assistant athletic director, had been the interim AD until Moon was lured away from his AD's job at Marshall.

``It's my goal to carry on Wyoming's tradition,'' said Moon, who played football at VMI. ``The success you've had in the past will complement the success we can have in the future. Any time you have this change, it's a growing process. But everyone needs to understand that if you don't meet change and move forwards, you're going to go backwards.''

Moon was an associate AD at Kansas State before going to Marshall in 1988. He recently received a three-year contract extension through June 30, 1999.

``Moon meets all the criteria I established for the position of athletic director. He has demonstrated the ability to recruit coaches for all programs. program,'' Wyoming president Terry Roark said. ``In short, he is the right man at the right time for the University of Wyoming.''

Marshall is scheduled to move from the NCAA Division I-AA Southern Conference to the I-A Mid-American Conference in fall 1997.
