PRICE EARNS MISSISSIPPI SCHOLARSHIP

Former Patrick Henry High School standout Jamie Price signed a grant-in-aid to compete in track and field at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday.

Price, who competed on the postgraduate team at Fork Union Military Academy this past season, is expected to see action in the 100 and 200 meters at Ole Miss.

The former Group AAA indoor 55-meter champion has posted personal bests of 10.38 seconds in the 100 and 21.19 in the 200.

In other sports news in the region:

* Six current or former University of Virginia men's soccer players were named to the U.S. Olympic team, which will be coached by former Cavalier coach Bruce Arena.

The six include two players who helped UVa win four straight NCAA championships from 1991-94, Clint Peay and A.J. Wood. Also making the team are former Cavalier Claudio Reyna and 1995 players Brandon Pollard, Damian Silvera and Billy Walsh. Another current Cavalier, Mike Fisher, was named to the team as an alternate but declined in order to concentrate on his studies.

Former UVa player Amanda Cromwell made the women's Olympic team as an alternate. Cromwell was a two-time all-American and a member of last year's U.S. women's World Cup team.

* Virginia's intercollegiate athletic program ranked 21st in the final 1996 Sears Directors' Cup standings. Stanford finished first among NCAA Division I schools based on the combined performances of women's and men's sports during the 1995-96 academic year.

North Carolina, at No.7, was the only other Atlantic Coast Conference school in the top 25. UVa finished tied for 19th in the 1995 Directors' Cup standings.

* UVa's Jamie Hahn is a second-team selection to the 1996 GTE Academic all-America softball team. She is a psychology/elementary education major and has a cumulative grade point average of 3.46.
