OBIT

BELL, Houston Lesher, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.I.C.S., 75, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, June 19, 1996, as the result of an automobile accident. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Baker Bell and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School where he was Valedictorian, served his internship at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Md., served his residency at Gill-Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, and his fellowship in Audiology and Fenestration Surgery at North Western University School of Medicine. He served on the following boards and other professional associations: Fellow American College of Surgeons, Fellow International College of Surgeons, Member American Otorhinologic Society for Plastic Surgery, Member American Laryngologic, Rhinologic and Otologic Society, Member American Academy of Plastic Surgery, Member American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, Member American Academy of Otolarygologic Allergy, Member American Academy of Medicine and State and Local Medical Societies. He served on the staff of Gill-Memorial Hospital from 1951 until 1977, was one of the original founders of Bradley Free Clinic and was the author of numerous scientific papers for professional journals and was a participant as lecturer and pan el member on numerous Otology programs. Surviving is his wife, Mary Stafford Chafee Bell; three sons, Houston L. Bell Jr., and his children, Ashley Bell and Houston L. Bell III (Tripp), Henry B. Bell, Carroll L. Bell and his wife, Cadell Bell, and their children, James K. Bell, Tiffany L. Bell, Julie V. Bell, Courter H. Watkins, William Watkins; and their one grandson, Joshua P. Bell; two stepchildren, Ann Turbyfill and Campbell Chafee, both of Augusta, Ga.; two sisters, Edith Bell Downey, Amanda Bell Phillips, both of Williamsport, Md. Funeral services will be conducted at St. John's Episcopal Church 2 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Thomas O'Dell and Dr. George K. Bowers. Entombment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. BELL, Lillian A., 92, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, June 18, 1996. She was the widow of Gordon Bell Sr. Surviving is a son, William G. Bell Jr. and wife, Margaret R. Bell; grandchildren, William G. She was born in Columbus, Ohio, January 23, 1909 and was the daughter of t he late John Hilton and Ada Hilton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Simon Edward Brown. Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth B. BUFORD, James B., 85, of Winter Haven, Fla., died Wednesday, June 19, 1996, at his residence. He was born in Knox County, Mo., on June 8, 1911, and retired as a machinist from Bacley Bait Company in Winter Haven in 1976. Protestant by faith, Mr. Buford was a seven-year veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in Panama in 1935 and in Australia and New Guinea During World War II. He moved to Winter Haven in 1951 from Lynchburg, Va. He is survived by his wife, Elsie W. Buford of Winter Haven; a sister, Isabelle B. Smith, and a half sister, Elmina B. Brown, both of Marseilles, Ill.; a half brother, Willis Swango Jr. of Ottawa, Ill.; his goddaughter, Kimberly Surratt Miller; his godson, Michael Scott Pearce, and several nieces and nephews. ENGLAND, Lettazell Bolden, 64, of Vinton, died Tuesday, June 18, 1996 at home. She was a retired nursing assistant from Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was awarded ``Nurse of the Year"" Award from the Nursing Service at RMH. She touched the hearts of everyone she met. Mrs. England was preceded in death by a son, Michael Timothy England, her mother and father, and one brother, Herman. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Donna M. and Roy E. Hurley, and Debbie S. England; two sons and daughters-in-law, James O. and Terri L. England, and Brian K. and Debbi L. FERGUSON, Charles C. Jr., (``Buddy''), 74, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, June 18, 1996, at Stonewall Jackson Hos

pital Extended Care Facility in Lexington. He was born December 2, 1921, in Buena Vista, a son of the late Charles C. Ferguson Sr. and Mary McCullough Ferguson. He was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren in Buena Vista. Mr. Ferguson was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Air Force in London, England. He retired in 1985 from Continental Telecom, Inc. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Thomas Ferguson; three sisters, Clara F. Rice, Virginia F. Shafer, Phyllis F. Byers; and one brother Carl (Ray) Ferguson, all of Buena Vista. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ron Thompson and Rev. FRITH, Jack E., of High View Terrace, Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, June 19, 1996, in a Roanoke hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Frith served as superintendent of the Filter Plant for the Town of Rocky Mount for many years. He was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He sought to honor rather than to be honored. His warmth, kindness, patience and generosity have touched many lives in beautiful and unforgettable ways. His example taught us how to share the gift of one's self in ways such as giving beautiful roses from his garden or teaching a Sunday school lesson. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Lillian; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gay and Branan Thompson of Roanoke, and Wanda and Eddie Smith of Boones Mill; one son and daughter-on-law, Wayne and Jo Frith of Hopewell; one granddaughter, Heather Frith; five grandsons, Blake Smith, Kevin Smith, Brent Smith, Scott Thompson and John Thompson; one sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Ike Kuper of Richmond; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas and Ruby Frith of Glade Hill, and Hugh and Ruth Frith of Rocky Mount, and several nieces and nephews. GORDON, Alfred Lewis, 61, of Salem, died Wednesday, April 24, 1996 in Lewis Gale Hospital. He had retired from the United States Navy after 30 years of service, serving in both Vietnam and Korea. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jerry Lewis Gordon and Mary Hicks Gordon. Survivors include a brother, Jerry Lee Gordon and wife, Pamela, Surry, England; a sister, Doris Jean Gordon, Salem. O'DELL, Ishmael Curtis, 83, of 1515 Prospect Avenue, Pulaski, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 1996, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. Born May 22, 1913, in Pulaski County, (Max Creek Community), Hiwassee, he was the son of the late Arthur Leachman O'Dell and Alice Cynthia Hawley O'Dell. He was also preceded in death by two wives, Frances Bell Foutz O'Dell and Odessa Grimes Huff O'Dell; one sister, Haskell Horton; and five brothers, Herman O'Dell, Bernice O'Dell, Jack O'Dell, Hebron O'Dell, and Arthur (Turis) O'Dell. He was a member of the Flint River Primitive Baptist Church, Huntsville, Ala., and was a retired construction engineer. SHAFER, Lester Owen, 74, of Radford, went to be with Jesus Tuesday, June 18, 1996, from the Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was a member of the Montgomery County Moose Lodge #1470, VFW Post 5311, a veteran of World War II, and was retired from RAAP. Surviving are one daughter, Marilyn H. SINK, Bessie Meade, 89, of Boones Mill, died Tuesday, June 18, 1996 in the local hospital. She was a daughter of the late Charlie Lee and Ida Flora Meade. TOWER, Jane M., of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 1996, at Fairfax Nursing Center, following a lengthy illness. A longtime resident of Roanoke, Mrs. Tower was very active at St. John's Episcopal Church since first arriving here from Essex Fells, N.J. Holding a multitude of positions in the church, she was the first woman elected to the vestry of St. John's, a past president of the women's auxiliary, and past vice president of the Episcopal Church Women. She also served with the diocesan youth division and stewardship committee, was a member of the bishop's survey and strategy committee, and taught Sunday School for many years. Also active in local civic affairs, Mrs. Tower contributed her services to organizations as varied as the Roanoke Broadway Theater League and the Valley Heart Association. Mrs. Tower was predeceased by her husband, David C. Tower. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Ron (Cindy) Sullivan of Fairfax; and sister, Mrs. William B. (Sally) Cross of Rowayton, Conn. A funeral service will be held at St. John's on Sunday, June 23, at 2 p.m. St. John's clergy will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's and Related Disorder Association.

Wright; four daughters, Teresa Gail Stone, Christiansburg, Barbara Counts, Springfield, Jean Ramsey, Winston-Salem, N.C., Joyce Salyer, Rock Hill, S.C.; a son, Kenneth Wright, Christiansburg; one brother, Theodore Walters, Lancaster, Pa.; two sisters, Florence Long, Christiansburg, Annie Thomas, Radford; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
