CELEBRITY SET AS SPEAKER FOR GAMES

Actor Bill Fagerbakke, better known as the character Dauber on the hit television comedy ``Coach,'' will be the guest speaker during the opening ceremonies for the Commonwealth Games of Virginia.

The ceremonies begin at 8 p.m. on July 12 at Victory Stadium and will be televised live on WSET Channel 13.

Fagerbakke has been a regular on the ABC comedy since its inaugural season in 1988-89. The show has been renewed for next season, its ninth.

In other sports in the region:

Roanoke's Tim McGuire will return to racing Saturday night at Franklin County Speedway after missing last weekend because of the birth of his first child.

Admission for The Affiliated Electronics 300 is $7 for adults, $5 for students and children 10 and under are free.

In addition to the 100-lap Late Model feature, all other divisions, including Limited Sportsman, Pure Stock, Mini Stock, Rookies and Any Car divisions, will be running.

Lee Taylor, a 14-year-old from Roanoke, shot a final round 68 to finish with a two-day total of 141, good enough for second place in the 13-14 age group at the A.J.G.A. Ping Myrtle Beach Classic golf tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Taylor, who will be a freshman at Patrick Henry High School this fall, shot a 73 in the first round at the par-72 Pinehills Course at Myrtlewood. Taylor finished two strokes behind Jason Harris of Clemmons, N.C., who shot a 139.

Former Radford soccer star Ian Spooner was named co-player of the week in the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues Premier League.

Spooner, a forward for the Roanoke RiverDawgs, had three goals in the team's 4-2 victory over the Richmond Kickers last week and the lone goal Sunday in Roanoke's 1-0 victory over the Washington (D.C.) Mustangs. Richmond competes in the Select League, two levels above the RiverDawgs, and the Mustangs are a Pro League team.

Also, Roanoke's Nathan Fairchild joined Spooner on the U.S.I.S.L Premier Team of the Week. The RiverDawgs face the South Florida Future tonight at 7:30 at Cave Spring Junior High School.
