The Booker T. Washington National Monument is open every day except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free

An audiovisual program, exhibits and self-guided tour depict Booker T. Washington's early years and life on the Burroughs plantation. Guided tours are offered daily at 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Call 721-2094.

To get there: From I-81, take I-581, then U.S. 220 south from Roanoke to Va. 122 (Booker T. Washington Highway).

From the Blue Ridge Parkway, take Va. 43 south to Va. 122.

From Lynchburg, take U.S. 460 west to Va. 122.

Today - General Jubal A. Early Historic Tour

1-5 p.m.

A tour of the Booker T. Washington National Monument and other Franklin County sites. For information: 334-5424.

Thursday, July 4 - Anniversary of Tuskegee Institute Founding

9 a.m.-5 p.m.

An exhibit commemorating the founding of Tuskegee Institute and the Booker T. Washington Birthplace Memorial will be on display in the visitor center through July 31.

Sunday, July 28 - Plantation Life

11 a.m.

Park staff and volunteers in period costume will present historical scenarios representing life on the Burroughs plantation.

Saturday, August 24 - National Park Service Founders Day

10 a.m.-noon

Costumed interpreters will demonstrate plantation life during the 1800s.

2 p.m.

A look at the history of the National Park Service on its 80th anniversary.
