BIG SOUTH APPOINTS KALLANDER

The Big South Conference appointed Kyle Kallander as its new commissioner Monday.

Kallender, who served as Southwest Conference commissioner in 1995-96, replaces George F. ``Buddy'' Sasser, who resigned after seven years in the post.

Kallender, who assumes his new duties Aug.1, becomes the Big South's third chief since its inception in 1983.

The Big South also announced that the conference office will be moving from Myrtle Beach, S.C., to Charlotte, N.C.

In other sports news in the region:

* Roanoke-based professionals Jeff Sprinkel, Wes Swope and Tim Holbrook were among 17 players earning spots in the 1996 AMF-Signet Open.

Sprinkel, assistant pro at Blue Hills Golf Club, fired a 74 at the Country Club of Staunton. Swope, teaching pro at Drive-A-Way Golf Center, fashioned a 76, while Holbrook, head pro at Hidden Valley Country Club, posted a 77.

Jim Williams of Cox's Driving Range in Blacksburg qualified with a 77.

* Defending champion Matt Paulson of Virginia Beach heads a 120-player field teeing off in today's qualifying round of the sixth VSGA Junior Match Play Championship at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond.

Today's low 32 qualifiers advance to Wednesday's start of match play. The championship match will be played Friday.

Eric Hooke of Highland, Marty Stanley of Ridgeway, Lee Fisher of Bedford, and Lexington's George Pickral and Eric Reynolds top the Southwest Virginia entries in the field.

* Trey Clower of Roanoke won the 14-15 year old age group of the Kiln Creek Junior Invitational in Virginia Beach. He shot 80-77 for a 157 total and won by nine shots. Clower is a rising sophomore at North Cross School.
