A pit bull attacked a Roanoke Sheriff's deputy as he climbed steps to serve a subpoena Monday. Police gave this account:
Detective T.S. Salter was driving along Chapman Avenue Southwest about 10:15 a.m. and saw the dog knock Deputy F.J. Morgan down.
Morgan got to his feet, and the dog jumped on him again, this time pinning him against the stair railing. Salter said the dog appeared to be biting the deputy.
Morgan fired a shot, which sent the dog running toward a house. The detective helped Morgan to his car and called for an ambulance.
Salter then found the dog's owner, who told the detective the dog had bitten another person a month ago, but the charge was dismissed because the victim did not come to a hearing.
Animal control officers took the dog to the pound. Morgan was treated at the scene.
