SALEM POLICE HUNT ROBBER, WOULD-BE ROBBER

Police are searching for two people in a mugging and an attempted mugging over the weekend in Salem.

A night manager at the McDonald's restaurant in the 2100 block of Apperson Drive was leaving the restaurant Saturday about 1:30 a.m. when an unidentified man struck him in the head, Salem police Sgt. D.R. Divers said. The robber fled with the night deposit bag, which held an undisclosed amount of money. The night manager was not injured, Divers said.

In an unrelated incident, a Roanoke Times newspaper carrier foiled a mugger's attempt to take his wallet early Monday at West Salem Plaza.

A man approached the carrier about 3:30 a.m. as he was picking up newspapers to be delivered. The suspect demanded the carrier's wallet, Divers said. The carrier alerted the newspaper's dispatcher by keying his radio. The would-be mugger displayed a 6-to 8-inch knife, the carrier told police.

When the suspect realized that the carrier had radioed for help, he fled without taking any money. The carrier was not injured, Divers said. Police did not release the name of either victim.
