EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK: GETTING KIDS TO READ IN THE SUMMER

Books, T-shirts, toys, a $100 cash prize and gift certificates including tickets to the "Long Way Home" outdoor drama, New River Valley Speedway, Salem Avalanche baseball, New River Valley Fair and New River Valley Mall Theatre movies are among the enticements for youngsters to read books this summer.

There are also summer reading programs for preschoolers and for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

The Pulaski County Public Library is offering a library lottery game at its Pulaski and Dublin branches for readers in grades 6-12 who complete books between now and Aug. 2. Readers in sixth grade can choose to participate in either the young adult or K-6 program.

The young adult segment of the summer reading program is cosponsored by the Pulaski County High School PTA.

Each time participants at the young adult level complete a book, they return to the library and answer three short questions about it. They put the slip with their answers in the box for the prize they want.

At 11 a.m. Aug. 2 at the Pulaski library, winners will be drawn and prizes will be awarded to those who have answered the questions correctly.

Participants can read as many books as they like, choosing from a list of some 400 provided by the high school and Pulaski and Dublin Middle Schools. Children's Librarian Rachael DeHaven and Sally Warburton have read them all and devised the questions.

Readers also have a chance to win instant prizes, by drawing from a box. Of course, along the lines of messages inside the tops of soft drinks offering similar kinds of prizes, the message might simply say, "Sorry, read again."

Library "dollars" will be awarded for every hour spent reading by participants in the kindergarten through sixth-grade program, and for every book the preschool children have read to them. These dollars can be "spent" at a library store at the Pulaski library July 29 through Aug. 2 offering various kinds of merchandise.

For children in kindergarten through sixth grade, special events include a storytelling session at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dublin library by Sherry Vaughn, a Pulaski County teacher and author of the children's book, "Melvin's Melons." A watermelon seed-spitting contest will follow.

Youngsters in the preschool program will hear storyteller Freda Hubble at 10:30 a.m. July 11 at the Pulaski library.

Other activities will be scheduled during the summer, with further information available by calling 980-7770 or 674-2856. This is the third year the county library has organized a summer reading program.
