A 16 1/2-mile stretch of U.S. 58 in Henry and Patrick counties will be widened to four lanes, according to plans approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board.
Construction is expected to begin in early 1998 on the $47million project, which runs from just east of Stuart in Patrick County to Spencer in Henry County. The work will be divided into six separate contracts.
With the board's action last week, the Virginia Department of Transportation can begin negotiations to acquire right of way for the road. Fourteen families will be relocated in Patrick County, and one business and a Missionary Baptist church will be displaced. Three families will be relocated in Henry County.
Several suggestions received from residents at a public hearing in January for details such as moving of crossovers and changes in driveway and intersection connections were incorporated in the final plan, VDOT said.
Among projects for which the board approved contracts last week was the widening and paving of sections of Virginia 668 and 915 near Clearbrook in Roanoke County at a cost of $1.4 million.
The board also approved plans to widen and pave 0.6 mile of Virginia 721 in Carroll County near Galax. The work will begin roughly one mile north of Galax and end at Virginia 607.
