Richmond shooting wounds 2
RICHMOND - Two gunmen on a downtown street corner opened fire Tuesday afternoon, wounding two men, police said.
Police spokeswoman Brenda Hughes said no arrests had been made in the shooting two blocks west of the state Capitol.
The wounded were identified as Odell Bristow, 40, and Odell Inge, 18, both of Richmond.
Bristow was shot in the side and underwent surgery Tuesday evening at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. A report on his condition was not immediately available. Inge was shot in the buttocks. He was treated at the hospital and released, a hospital spokesman said.
The shooting occurred shortly after 3 p.m. at the corner of 7th and Grace streets. The streets were blocked off during rush hour as police collected evidence.
Capt. Robert Childress said there were at least 40 people within one-half block of the shooting. ``But only one person would talk with us. Everyone else apparently didn't want to get involved,'' he said.
Childress said police did not know a motive for the shooting.

Virginia to get another area code
RICHMOND - For the second time in a year, Bell Atlantic is adding a new area code in Virginia to meet demand for phone lines in the state.
Beginning Monday, portions of the state now within the 804 area code will switch to a 757 area code. Callers will be given seven months to get used to the change, after which 804 will no longer work on affected telephone lines.
The region switching to 757 includes the Peninsula (Williamsburg, Newport News and Hampton), South Hampton Roads (Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach) and Virginia's Eastern Shore.
Rates or local calling areas will not be affected, officials said.
The change, announced in December, was necessitated by a dwindling supply of telephone numbers in the 804 area code, Bell Atlantic spokesman Paul Miller said. Besides home telephones, many households are adding lines for fax machines, pagers, cellular phones, modems and other communication devices.|

2 dogs face death after killing 4 pets
NEWPORT NEWS - A pair of large crossbred dogs may be put to death after going on a weekend rampage, jumping fences from back yard to back yard in search of other dogs to fight, animal control officials say.
Four pet dogs were killed and at least nine more were mauled, according to officials and pet owners.
Some residents of the Denbigh neighborhood where the attacks occurred Sunday morning went in search of the marauders with guns until the dogs were captured by animal control officers.
The dogs, believed to be shepherds mixed with either husky or malamute, were put in quarantine at the Peninsula Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said SPCA director Gene Falls.
The dogs' owner, Clarence E. Hacker, may face a charge of allowing vicious dogs to run loose, a misdemeanor that carries up to a $1,000 fine and destruction of the dogs, if a judge orders it, said SPCA director Gene Falls.
