AKERS, Arthur K., Jr. , (""Pete""), 79, of Durham Regent Retirement Center, Durham, N.C., died Monday, June 24, 1996, in Hill Haven Health Care Center, Chapel Hill, N.C., after a short illness. A long-time resident of the area, he was born February 8, 1917 in Richmond, Va., a son of Arthur K. Akers and Frances Watt Shelton. He attended schools in Virginia and Birmingham, Ala., graduating from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. He served in World War II with Gen. Mark Clark's 5th Army from it's invasion of North Africa to it's Italian Campaign completion. He was attached to the Finance Corp. After his discharge in 1945, he re-enlisted in the U. S. Army and served on Gen. MacArthur's staff in Japan through 1947. After his return, he made his home in Chapel Hill, where he lived with his aunt, Dr. Susan G. Akers, of the U.N.C. Library School. He was employed by J. W. Polk, a publisher of industrial and municipal directories until his retirement in 1972. He is survived by a brother, John K. Akers, Mayville, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Nancy Goss, Ormond Beach, Fla.; a niece, Susan H. Akers, Mt. Tarbor, N.J.; and three nephews, John K. H. Akers, Jr., Denver, Colo., James Warner Akers, Summit, N.Y. and Richard Yardley Akers, Florham Park, N. J. Funeral services 3 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church of Floyd, near a family homestead known as ``Summertime"", where he spent many years as a boy and after his retirement, with the Rev. Robert S. Link officiating. Interment will be in Jacksonville Cemetery. Arrangements by Wood Funeral Home. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
ALPHIN, George Richard, 89, of Buchanan, passed away Thursday, June 27, 1996. He was a retired self-employed sawmill operator, and more recently, a farmer. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Alphin Booze and Elizabeth Alphin Brown. He is survived by one son, Richard Alphin Jr. of Roanoke; four daughters and sons-in-law, Jane Alphin and Frank Novitzki of Memphis, Tenn., Anne and Fred Forsmark of Richmond, Mary Jo and Wesley Kern of Buchanan, Amy and David Fowler of Buchanan; one sister, Louise Alphin McGee of Buchanan; three brothers, Horace E. Alphin of Clifton, Va., Thurman Alphin of Hagerstown, Md., Guy LLoyd Alphin of Buchanan; five grandchildren, Julia Beth Forsmark of Richmond, Richard and Michael Davis of Memphis, Tenn., Charles-Richard and Maribeth Kern of Buchanan. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 29, 1996, 3 p.m., at the Buchanan Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Fleet Powell officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Rader Funeral Home, Buchanan. BARBETTINI, George Peter, 85, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., formerly of Pulaski, Va., passed away Wednesday, June 26, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Davidson Barbettini. Surviving include his children, Mrs. Gene Gray (Margaret) of New Jersey, Mrs. Fred Rembish (Mary) also of New Jersey, Mrs. Cecil Murphy (Barbara) of Draper, Mr. Henry Barbettini of Roanoke, Mr. Charles Barbettini of Dublin, Mrs. Garrette Burnette (Louise) of North Carolina; three grandchildren; one great-grandson. CROWDER, Jo Oakey, 53 of Salem died Wednesday, June 26, 1996 at her Salem home. She was a lifelong Salem resident and had worked with Roanoke County Schools and was employed by Steve's Hot Dogs and also City of Salem Schools. She was a member of the Salem Church of Christ where she was the Organist. She was instrumental in forming a coping with Cancer Support Group within the Church and was a past President of Salem Junior Women's Club. Survivors include her husband, Melvin L. Crowder; daughters and sons-in-law, Tanya C. and Mike Berbert, Salem, Winsor C. and Kenneth J. St. Clair, also of Salem, Gudrun C. and Todd A. Reeder, Charlottesville; father, William J. Oakey, Salem; grandchildren, William and Carly Francisco, Samantha and Graham Berbert; and a grand-dog, Macy; and a very special friend and cousin, Lucia Craighead, Salem. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 29, 1996 at 11 a.m. in the Salem Church of Christ with the Ministers Jim Herron and Brian Orahood officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Family will receive friends at the John M. Jo Crowder was an inspiration to many people throughout her life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

He was retired from the Hoechst-Celanese Plant, Narrows, with 50 years service, and was a veteran of World War II, stationed in Japan. OWEN, Dewey Bellfield, 97, of Salem passed away Wednesday, June 26, 1996 in a local hospital. He is survived by his wife, Margaret B. Owen; and eight nieces and nephews. He had worked at Westvaco in the power department for 32 years. He was a member of the Covington Moose Lodge for 54 years, and a long time member of Bethel Baptist Church. WARE, James Donald, 63, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, June 26, 1996, in a Roanoke hospital. Mr. Ware was a former Dean of American Guild of Organists and a teacher at the Viaud's School. He retired from World Travel Service, and was a former choir director and Minister of Youth at First Christian Church, and Minister of Music for Windsor Hills United Methodist Church. Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Dick Welch, Roanoke; a nephew and his wife, John and Mary Keith Welch, Roanoke; great-niece, Becky Welch, Roanoke; and an aunt, Nina Robertson, Roanoke. YOUNG, Beverly Arthur, 79, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, June 27, 1996. Mr. Young served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Norfolk and Southern. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Hunt Bible Class. He is survived by his wife, Lois Cumbie Henderson Young; a daughter, Brenda Young Smith; stepsons, Donald R. Henderson, William L.
