White Rocks, a U.S. Forest Service campground in Giles County, reopens today after a three-month delay.
Extensive ice-storm damage and a lack of maintenance personnel to clean it up forced the campground to remain closed beyond its usual seasonal opening date of April 1, Blacksburg District Ranger David Collins said in a press release.
The campground still isn't completely free of debris. About 80 storm-damaged trees have been removed, but some of the branches and other "vegetative litter" remain, Collins said.
The Forest Service is asking for volunteers to help finish the job. Anyone willing to help can call the Blacksburg Ranger District office at 552-4641.
To reach White Rocks Campground take Virginia 635 off U.S. 460 just west of Pembroke. Drive some 16 miles along Stony Creek to Virginia 613, turn right and travel one mile to the campground entrance. It has 49 campsites. Campers are charged a $4 fee per night.
