BOCOCK, Robert Warren, 87, of the Virginia Veterans Care Center, died Thursday, June 27, 1996. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had retired from the Coca Cola Bottling Co. Mr. Bocock was predeceased by his wife, Emma B. Bocock. Surviving are six brothers, James W. Bocock, Radford, Lacy T. Bocock, Hardy, Floyd W. Bocock and Lloyd G. Bocock, both of Giles Co., John H. Bocock and Cloyd W. Bocock, both of Roanoke. Graveside services will be 10 a .m. Monday, July 1, 1996 at Fairview Cemetery. The Rev. Frank Feather will officiate. BROWN, John William, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, June 28, 1996. He was born January 14, 1938. He was a former emloyee of Fabricated Metals Inc. and retired as a dump truck owner operator hauling from Blue Ridge Quarry and was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Kennett Brown, a half brother, Russell B. Brown and half sister, Christine Ashwell. Survivors include his mother, Sallie Prather Brown, Vinton; and his wife of 37 years, Thelma Hodges Brown; three sons, Steve Allen and wife, Darlene Brown, Michael Lynn Sr. and wife, Kimberly Cash Brown, Gary Wayne Brown, all of Roanoke; one daughter, Debby Brown Lee and husband, David Wayne Lee, Fincastle; three grandchildren, Michael Lynn Brown Jr., Travis Wayne Lee and Michelle Rhea Lee; one brother, Joseph Junior Brown, Vinton; four sisters, Ida Alzie and husband, Bobby C. Kesler, Hardy, Della B. St. Clair, Vinton, Betty and husband, Vernon Gregory, Roanoke, Joyce B. Higgs, Roanoke; brother-in-law and wife, Buford V. and Brenda J. Hodges; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, July 1, 1996 from the Lotz Vinton Chapel with the Dr. Rev. Gene Williams officiating. Burial to follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Lotz Vinton Chapel. CARLTON, Doris Hudson, 67, of 2813 Luray Street, N.E., Roanoke, died Friday, June 28, 1996 at her home. She was the widow of Joseph M. Carlton and predeceas ed by her mother, Grace H. Short, stepfather, William P. Short, and brother, Thomas P. Short. Mrs. Carlton was a member of Hollins Road Baptist Church and retired from Double Envelope. Surviving are two sons, James C. Drewery, Greensboro, N.C., Joseph (``Fred'') Carlton, Roanoke; three brothers, W. P. Short, Jr., Roanoke, Clarence Ray Short, Salem, Walter J. Short, Catawba; five grandchildren, Steven Drewery, Jeffrey Drewery, Brandon Carlton, Matthew Carlton, Dustin Carlton; a great-granddaughter, Sara Drewery; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 1, 1996 from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Mark Washington and the Rev. Charles R. (``Chip'') Doyle will officiate. COUNTS, John Smyth Sr., (``Buttermilk""), passed away Friday, June 28, 1996. He was lifetime resident of South Salem, and a longtime sports fan. He was a member of Salem Lodge #100 I.O.O.F. and a charter member of Faith Rebakah Lodge #98. He was a member of First Christian Church and retired from the N & W Railroad. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Louise Creech Counts; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger L. and Janet Counts of Millersville, Md., John S. and Lendy Counts Jr. of Salem; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy C. and Jeff Johns of Roanoke, Robin C. and Dennis Garrett of Elliston; brothers, A. J. (Cooney) Counts of Salem, George Curtis Counts of Bluefield, Va.; sister, Vera C. Long of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 1, 1996 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem with the Rev. Wayne McCauley officiating. Burial to follow in the Sherwood Memorial Park. EARLY, Sadie Miller, 92, of Roanoke, died Thursday, June 27, 1996, at the Roanoke Friendship Manor Center. Mrs. Early was born December 12, 1903, in Bridgewater and was the daughter of the late John T. and Elizabeth Catherine Click Miller. She was a housewife. She lived in Broadway most of her life. She was a former member of the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren in Broadway, where she was a member of the Womens Fellowship, Sunday School teacher, and Bible Study Group. She was a present member of the Summerdean Church of the Brethren in Roanoke. On June 11, 1925 she married Ernest F. Early, who died August 23, 1993. Surviving are three daughters, Doris Smith of Churchville, Corinne Crumley of Harrisonburg, Ann McDermott of Richmond; two sons, E. Franklin Early of Roanoke, Frederick S. Early of McLean; two sisters, Nora Sayre of Waynesboro, Edna Miller of Bridgewater; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Jim Worline. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.

GREER, Verna Clea Cook, 100, of Rocky Mount, died Thursday, June 27, 1996, at the home of Mrs. Jewel Altice. She was a devoted member of the Rocky Mount Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Walton Greer; eight sisters; and two brothers. Survivors include Sandra Kirk Hobbs, who grew up in the Greer home; many devoted nieces, nephews, and close fri ends. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, June 30, at 2 p.m. in the Rocky Mount Baptist Church by Dr. Joe R. Bryant. Interment will be in High Street Cemetery in Rocky Mount. HAMMETT, Homer L., 62, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, June 27, 1996. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church since 1972, where he was a member of the Wesley Bible Class, Sunday School teacher, former Finance Chairman and former Chairman of the Board. A community leader, he had served on the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Board, Southern Seminary (Southern Virginia College) Board of Trustees, Virginia National Bank/Sovran Bank Board, and chairman of numerous civic and church committees. A graduate of Auburn University, Mr. Hammett was retired from Blue Bird Body Company, where he worked for twenty-five years and was employed by the State of Virginia Center for Innovative Technology for several years. At the time of his death, he was working with Carpenter Manufacturing Company. Mr. Hammett is survived by his wife, Carolyn W. Hammett; three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Kim of Athens, Ga., David and Donna of Asheville, N.C., and Drew and Chris of Chattanooga, Tenn. Additional survivors include four grandchildren, Madison, Mallory, Ethan and Henry. Mr. Hammett is also survived by his mother, Eunice P. Hammett; and one brother, J. Marcellus Hammett, both of Sharpsburg, Ga. Funeral services will be held at St. John's United Methodist Church Sunday, June 30, 1996, 2 p.m, with burial to follow at Green Hill Cemetery. HENDLEY, William M., 73, of Glen Allen and formerly of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, June 27, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Y. Hendley and was a Veteran of World War II. He was the former owner of Roanoke Sprinkler Company and a member of the Phalanx Masonic Lodge #31 A. F. A. M. Surviving are two sisters, Rosa Hendley and Catherine Forstmann, both of Richmond; three nieces and one nephew. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 1996 in Evergreen Burial Park. SMITH, Margaret Kate Whitley, 108, of Grundy, passed away Thursday, June 27, 1996 following a lengthy illness. Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Rachel Whitten Whitley. She had been a resident of Grundy, Va. most of her life, a member of Grundy United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon C. Smith in January 1963. She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Nell Remines Smith; one special nephew, Jack C. Smith; one grandson-in-law, Judge Nicholas Persin, all of Grundy. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, one son, Harold Whitley Smith on November 12, 1989, one granddaughter, Peggy Smith Persin on October 20, 1983, four sisters, Blanche McCall, Sadie Shelton, Rose Whitley and Jane Mundy, and four brothers, Robert Whitley, Walter Whitley, Joe Whitley and Keister Whitley. Funeral services for Margaret Kate Whitley Smith will be conducted Sunday, June 30, 1996 at 2 p.m. in the Grundy United Methodist Church, Grundy, Va., with Evg. Clarence Greenleaf and the Rev. Jay Ferguson officiating, with entombment to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va.
