Church dedication in Boones Mill
A new Boones Mill United Methodist Church will be consecrated July 7 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Richard Worden, Roanoke District superintendent, officiating.
The new $365,000 building is on a hill above U.S. 220 and replaces a structure dating from 1850 which is being demolished because of structural weakness.
The Rev. Benjamin Chidester, the part-time pastor since 1990, said the new worship center will seat about 200; the cross-shaped building also includes a fellowship hall, classrooms and office space. Several articles, including the pulpit, are from the old church, and a new Communion table has been built by a member.
Hunger walk raises $3,700
More than $3,700 was raised by 100 hikers in a walk held earlier this month in Franklin County to help relieve world hunger.
Registration is open for the seventh annual world hunger bicycle ride on July 20 and for the community auction on Aug. 10. Bikers will travel 50 or 100 miles to fulfill pledges.
The auction features the sale of antiques, crafts, quilts, woodwork, toys and livestock as well as fresh meat.

Appeal supports Palestinian rights
A Jerusalem Appeal statement issued in Beirut by Christian and Muslim leaders has been applauded by the Rev. Joe Hale, general secretary of the World Methodist Council. The appeal was issued following a mid-June meeting of 300 spiritual leaders and about 70 advisers and calls on Christians and Muslims throughout the world to support Palestinian rights. The appeal criticizes what the leaders see as Israel's attempt to bring Jerusalem fully under its control. The only solution, it states, is one "where Arab sovereignty, linking Jerusalem to Palestine, is restored." Hale noted that Jerusalem "is sacred to and loved by 1.8 billion Christians, 1 billion Muslims and 18 million Jews."
