The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is searching for a man who escaped custody at the magistrate's office Saturday.
Jeffrey Wayne Quesenberry, 31, of Hiwassee, had been served with papers charging him with assault and was being taken to the jail by Deputy K.W. Price when he escaped at 12:44 p.m.
"He just jumped down the steps and took off," said Lt. K.N. Turner of the Montgomery County sheriff's office.
Quesenberry, who was unarmed, fled the courthouse square and was last seen in the downtown Christiansburg area, Turner said.
Escape charges are pending against Quesenberry now as well.
Turner described Quesenberry as a slender 5-foot-9-inch white male. He weighs 150 pounds and has medium-length curly red hair, blue eyes, freckles and a full beard.
Anyone who has information about Quesenberry or his whereabouts should contact the sheriff's office at (540)382-2951.
