ALLEN, Beulah Moore, (``Pat""), 95, of Fincastle, died Friday, June 28, 1996. She was born in Roa noke County, a daughter of the late Mansfield and Cordelia Moore. She came to Fincastle in 1920 and was a Public Stenographer for many years. She was a Deputy Clerk of the Circuit Court of Botetourt County from 1942 until her retirement in 1972. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and George Black, Fincastle; one stepdaughter, Elizabeth Savage, Roanoke; one granddaughter and her husband, Lisa and Leonard Newmark; one grandson, David Cassady; four stepgrandchildren, Leslee Stull, Jimmy Stull, Michael Stull, Missy Stull; two great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Monday, July 1, 1996, at 11 a.m. in the Rader Daleville Chapel, with the Rev. Neil Dunnavant officiating. Burial will be private and at a later date. ANDERSON, Nannie Francis, 84, of 60 Applewood Dr ., Christiansburg, formerly of Summers County, W. Va., died Friday, June 28, 1996 at the Montgomery County Hospital in Blacksburg, Va. Born at Pipestem, W. Va. on April 26, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Julius C. and Lydia M. Weatherford Anderson. She was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting very much. She was of the Christian faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Anderson and a sister, Hattie Marie Dunford. Survivors include one sister, Alice Mainhart, Baltimore, Md.; brother-in-law, Roy H. Dunford, Newport; nephew, James Lilly and his wife, Susanna, Newport; niece, Gale Williams and her husband, Ralph, Pembroke; special friends, David and Jeanie Jones, Christiansburg; and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, July 1, 1996 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on Athens Road in Princeton, with the Reverend Rick Sadler officiating. ANDERSON, Queen Viola, 73, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, June 29, 1996. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Wilbert Thomas (Marthalena) Anderson of Fayetteville, N.C.; three daughters, Senia Mae Smith, Shirley Ann Smith and Alice Lucille Lewis of Roanoke; one brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. George (Theda) Brown of Connecticut; one sister, Mary Alice Rucker of Baltimore, Md.; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. ATWELL, Jerry Scott, 59, of 212 W. Westview St., Narrows, died Friday evening, June 28, 1996 in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. A life-long resident of Narrows, he was born on March 8, 1937 and was preceded in death by his father, William Scott Atwell. He was a retired Director of Public Works for the Town of Narrows. He is survived by his mother, Mildred Wilkinson Atwell of Narrows; his wife, Diane Stafford Atwell, Narrows; two stepsons, Bradley Stafford, Pearisburg, Benjamin Johnston, Narrows; two daughters, Misty A. Blankenship and Sherrie Atwell, both of Narrows; a stepdaughter, Bridget Johnston, Christiansburg; a sister and her husband, Arminta and Arthur Hutton, Port St. John, Fla. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Narrows, Va., with the Rev. Rick Painter and the Rev. Kimball Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Narrows. The family will gather with their friends at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, Va., Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. and at the church after 12 noon Monday.

BLAKE, James Norman, Jr., 79, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, June 29, 1996, in a local hospital. He was a retired signal maintainer from the Norfolk & Western Railway with 45 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Martha Spangler Blake; two sons, James Norman Blake III of Seattle, Wash., and Larry Clay Blake of Charleston, W.Va.; two daughters, Martha Ann Rakes of Moneta and Eleanor Jean Foster of Roanoke; 16 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p. m. Monday from Oakey's North Chapel. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. COCHRAN, Shirley Marie, 83, of Roanoke, died Saturday, June 29, 1996. She is survived by one daughter, Betty Jane Simmons of Buchanan; one brother, Raymond P. Carter, and one sister, Avalena (``Abby"") Brown, both of Roanoke; three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. COUNTS, John Smyth Sr., (``Buttermilk""), 80, passed away Friday, June 28, 1996. He was lifetime resident of South Salem, and a longtime sports fan. He was a member of Salem Lodge #100 I.O.O.F. and a charter member of Faith Rebakah Lodge #98. He was a member of First Christian Church and retired from the N & W Railroad. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Louise Creech Counts; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger L. and Janet Counts of Millersville, Md., John S. and Lendy Counts Jr. of Salem; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy C. and Jeff Johns of Roanoke, Robin C. and Dennis Garrett of Elliston; brothers, A. J. (Cooney) Counts of Salem, George Curtis Counts of Bluefield, Va.; sister, Vera C. Long of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. GRIFFIN-CROSS, Rheda L., 49, of Blacksburg, died early Saturday, June 29,1996 at her home. Until her retirement, she was a Certified Public Accountant at Virginia Tech. GROGAN, Gwendolyn Rose, 72, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, June 28, 1996. She was preceded in death by her father, James Rose, and a brother, Jimmy Rose. HATCHER, Basil Druheart, 85, of Roanoke, died Friday, June 28, 1996. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and had retired from Rusco Window Company, where he served as Vice President. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and former vestryman. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Frances Garst Hatch er; daughter, Ann Hatcher Kirk and son-in-law, J. Dan Kirk, Smyrna, Ga.; son, L. Flick Hatcher, Vancouver, British Columbia; granddaughters, Meghann D. Kirk and Whitney A. Kirk, Smyrna, Ga.; one sister, Maude H. Keller, Richmond; numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 1, 1996 at Christ Episcopal Church. The Dr. Robert T. Copenhaver will officiate. HAYES, Vivian Oretta Smith, 82, of Pearisburg, died Friday evening, June 28, 1996 in Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, Va. Mrs. Hayes was born May 30, 1914 in Coeburn, Va. and was a daughter of the late Frank and Blanche Smith. Mrs. Hayes was an active and dedicated member of the Holy Fa mily Catholic Church in Pearisburg, Va. She is survived by one daughter, Deborah A. Hayes, Pearisburg; one son, Douglas A. Hayes, Pearisburg; two grandchildren, William K. Hayes, Hillsville, Mary Caroline James, Murrell's Inlet, S.C.; three great-grandchildren and beloved cousins, James and Patricia Bettendorf of Fulton, Md. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 1, 1996 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Pearisburg, Va., with Father Louie Benoit officiating. HUGHES, Dr. William Caswell, Sr., 78, of Boones Mill, passed away Friday, June 28, 1996. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lulie Porter and Earl Byrd Hughes, a son, William Caswell Hughes, Jr. and two brothers, Dr. Porter Hughes and Gaither Hughes. He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret Deanne Hughes; and brother, Dr. Clinton Hughes and his wife, Mary Walker, Atlanta, Ga.; daughter-in-law, Katherine I. Hughes, Lynchburg; a loving daughter, Mary Katherine (Katie) Hughes and her fella, Timothy Schirm, Roanoke; a devoted granddaughter, Lee H. Martin, husband, Lindsey W. Martin; and great-granddaughter, Ryan Caswell Martin, Lynchburg; stepdaughter Karon Dyer, husband, Don, and their daughter, Chelsea; stepson, Adrian Willis, his wife Rhonda and their children, Steven and Tammy, all of Roanoke. He is also survived by two ex-wives, Virginia L. Woolridge, Lynchburg and Florence H. Hughes, Rocky Mount. He graduated Lynchburg College with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He then went on to teach and later became a principal within the Pittsylvania County S chool System. He enlisted in the Air Force on December 8, 1941 and was commissioned on December 26, 1941. He achieved the rank of Major in the North African Campaign of World War II. After returning to the States, he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati. In 1953, he moved to Franklin County, Va. to practice medicine for Wolfe Medical Group. It was here he met and started his life-long friendship with Judge B. A. (Monk) Davis and his devoted nurse, Pate Cobbs. In 1959 he opened Boones Mill Medical Clinic. He was revered by his patients for his tireless and faithful attention for over 30 years. He retired in 1986. The family requests that no flowers be sent to the mortuary or the family's homes and instead that donations be made to the Boones Mill Rescue Squad at P. O. Box 73, Boones Mill, Va. 24065, for their great kindness and help through Dr. Hughes' illnesses. The family would also like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the wonderful staff who took care of him at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Boones Mill Medical Clinic. He will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Donald R. Dyer officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Flora Funeral Service, 342 S. Main St., Rocky Mount.

JARRETT, C. Fletcher, 91, of 156 East Academy Street, Asheboro, N.C., died Saturday, June 29, 1996, at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale, N.C. He was a member of Cedar Falls United Methodist Church. He is survived by a daughter, Pat Hutchens of Greensboro, N.C.; a grandson, Charles R. (``Chuck"") Sugg of Roanoke, Va., and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 1996, at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, N.C., with th e Rev. Tom Stinson-Wesley and the Rev. MENEFEE, Bonnie Kiser, 88, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 28,1996. She was a member of Preston Oaks Baptist Church. She was the widow of Irvin Menefee. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Edwin and Becky Menefee; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Jimmy Dean; three grandsons, Christopher Dean, Craig and Jeff Menefee; one sister, Esther Kiser of Lebanon, Va. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, July 1,1996, at Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. Joe Greene officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's North Chapel.
