William Byrd's Michael Berry, the Timesland boys' athlete of the year, is one of 34 Timesland representatives selected to compete in seven Virginia High School Coaches' Association East-West all-star games next week in Hampton. Berry will play for the West in the boys' soccer game. He was the Timesland boys' soccer player of the year and also was All-Timesland in football.
Berry will be joined on the West squad by Wes Lewis of Martinsville, Tony Lisanti of Christiansburg, Pat Barritt of Patrick Henry, Kevin Moore of Radford, Ben Pinkerton of Blacksburg and Tom Newton of Cave Spring.
There also are seven Timesland players in football, headed by offensive player of the year Shayne Graham, a kicker and punter from Pulaski County, and the defensive player of the year, linebacker Brandon Steele of Giles.
Other Timesland football players on the West team are Blacksburg defensive back Steven Hunt, Radford defensive lineman Kelly Underwood, Salem offensive lineman Dan Baker, Cave Spring defensive end Jimmy Fusco and Bath County center Dennis Loan.
In boys' basketball, the West has William Fleming's James Stokes, the Timesland player of the year; J.J. Coles, the playmaker from Liberty's unbeaten Group AA championship team; Northside's Justin Porterfield; William Byrd's Chris Childress; and Glenvar's James Williams.
Timesland girls' basketball players are Floyd County's Melissa Cantrell, Salem's Shellie Johnson, William Byrd's Cathy Smith and Galax's Tammy Cox.
The West volleyball team is led by Patrick Henry setter Allison Suggs, the Timesland player of the year. Suggs is joined by teammate Becca Hogan, Blacksburg's April Rogers and George Wythe's Christy Terry.
In baseball, Grayson County's Chad Shaffner, the Timesland player of the year, is an outfielder for the West. Other Timesland players are Bath County catcher Corey Wolfe, Cave Spring infielder Doug Kenny and Giles pitcher-first baseman Josh Stephens.
There also are four Timesland players on the West softball team: Cave Spring outfielder Kari Whitney, William Byrd pitcher Tamasa Adams, Floyd County outfielder Kim Moran and Lord Botetourt catcher Teresa Snodgrass.
