BLANKENSHIP, Minnie Wiley, 73, of Narrows, died Monday morning, July 1, 1996. She was an active member of the Cornerstone Pentecostal Church in Narrows. She was preceded in death by her father, Henderson Wiley; and her husband, Emitte Blankenship; a sister; and a granddaughter. She is survived by her mother, Gladie Wiley, Athens, W.Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Charlie Clark of Narrows; and a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Tommie Jane Blankenship of Peterstown, W.Va.; a brother, James Wiley of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Odell Calfee of Radford; three grandsons, Burman Clark of Roanoke, Eddie Clark and Jerry Blankenship Jr., both of Narrows; one granddaughter, Sherri Billos of Mt. Airy, N.C.; and one great-grandson, Ross Clark of Roanoke. She also leaves behind a host of ``loving'' family and friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Cornerstone Pentecostal Holiness Church in Narrows with the Rev. Kimball Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will gather with their friends at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
BYRD, James Benjamin Sr., of Fairfax County, died on Tuesday, June 11, 1996, from a brain tumor, at Woodbine Nursing Home at the age of 69. J. B. (as he was known by many) was born in Miami, Fla. and lived most of his life in Virginia. He served in the Navy during World War II. He retired from Maurice Electric Supply Co., and spent the last few years working in his gard ens and researching the family history. He attended Alexandria Bible Church. He is survived by his five children, James Lenwood of Stafford, Bruce Elliott of Manassas, Jamie Marie Quick of Knoxville, Tenn., James Benjamin Jr. of Oldsmar, Fla., Vivian Byrd Jones of Alexandria; two sisters, Catherine Kiser of Winchester and Nadine Kuper of Raleigh, N.C. He was the loving grandfather of ten grandchildren; and great-grandfather of seven great-grandchildren
CALL, Dorothy Ferguson, 78, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, July 1, 1996. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Edward B. Ferguson and a great-grandson, Brandon Alexander. She is survived by her husband, James L. CLINE, Audrey Wrights, 72, of 805 Wrights Farm Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C., died Sunday, June 30, 1996, at her home. She was born February 18, 1924 in Forsyth County to Seymour Norton and Inez Bodenhamer Wrights. Mrs. Cline was a member of Boyer's Chapel Church of Christ. Surviving are two sons, Dallas Harold Cline of Winston-Salem and Donald Gray Cline of Kernersville; three daughters, M. Ellen Cardwell of the home, Josephine E. Schons of Roanoke, and Esther Lee Cardwell of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Wrights of Walkertown. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Boyer's Chapel Church of Christ by Mr. James Percival. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. KELLEY, Velma M. Thompson, 80, of Blue Ridge, passed away Monday, Ju ly 1, 1996, at her residence. She was a retired school teacher after forty years of dedicated service. John was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church and was a former member of the Clearbrook Lions Club and Toastmasters Club. He was a retired contractor and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elsie Slaydon King; son and daughter-in-law, John H., Jr. and Sarah C. King, Roanoke Co.; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara King and C. Richard Smith, Powahatan, Va., Janet King and William (Bill) Trent, Salem, Nancy King and Harold L. SWEET, Eugene Kyle, 77, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, June 30, 1996, at Shenandoah Valley Health Care Facility. Born October 23, 1918, in Augusta County, he was the son of the late Andrew Sweet and Emma Rowe Sweet. Mr. Sweet was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and a retired truck driver for Gulf Oil. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, having fought in the Sicilian Campaign and the Italian Campaign, and was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Battle Stars, and the American Defense Service Ribbon. Surviving are his wife, Mae Elizabeth Smith Sweet, Buena Vista; daughter, Betty Jean Nuner, Port St. Lucie, Fla.; son, Stanley Eugene Sweet, Glasgow; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary Ellen and Curtis Chappell, Hampton, Hazel and Sherman Baker, Hampton, Winnie Nelson, Newport News; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Ruth Sweet, Glade Hill, Charles and Joyce Sweet, Hampton; special sister-in-law, Effie Ruley, Buena Vista; three grandchildren, Sandy Nuner, Drexel Hill, Pa., Brandy Sweet, Midlothian, David Nuner, Port St. Lucie, Fla. THURMAN, Leonard Robert, (``Mr. T.""), 80, of Buchanan, died Sunday, June 30, 1996, in Lewis Gale Hospital, Salem. He retired from the Signal Department of the Norfolk and Western Railway after 41 years of service. Mr. Thurman was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge #151, Buchanan for 50 years and was a longtime exhibitor and supporter of the American Saddlebred Horse Industry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Herma Mattox Thurman; his parents, Robert and Laura Sumner Thurman; brothers, Fred, Charles, Wilson, and Edward Thurman. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Thurman Martin, Buchanan; granddaughters, Tricia Marie Tate and her husband, Mark Tate, Fincastle, and Julie Dawn Martin, Buchanan; one great-grandson, Brandon Scott Tate; two sisters; Cuba Murray, Roanoke, Frances Wilson, Brenham, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Emory and Pauline Thurman, Roanoke; three sisters-in-law, Irene Thurman, Dell Thurman, and Doris Thurman, all of Roanoke; and his special friends and members of the North Star Round Table in Buchanan. WHEELER, Cecil Edward, 65, of Alexandria, formerly of Buena Vista, died Monday, July 1, 1996 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. He was born November 21, 1930 in Buena Vista, son of the late James E. Wheeler and Eva Cash Wheeler. He served in the U. S. Navy and was a retired Tile Setter. Mr. Wheeler attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He is survived by his mother,Eva Cash Wheeler of Buena Vista; five sisters, Frances Gibbs of Buena Vista, Mary Kistner of California, Shirley Hayden and JoAnne Davis, both of Alexandria, Rhomelda Hunt of Fredricksburg; and several nieces and nephews.
