CONSTRUCTION WORKER KILLED BY ELEVATOR

A construction worker was killed Saturday in Wythe County when a 6,500-pound elevator cage fell on him at the site of a future motel at Fort Chiswell.

State police identified him as Ted Harrison Logan Jr., 28, of Gerald, Mo.

Logan was at the base of the shaft as the cage was being hoisted up by cable for some work, said state police 1st Sgt. D.A. Shaver. A chain in the hoist gear box broke, and the cage fell.

Logan was working for the Murphy Adcock Drilling Co., also from Missouri, which is doing the construction. The property and motel is owned by Robert G. Davis of Wytheville.

The accident happened about 10:35 a.m. at the site just off Interstate 81's Exit 80. - Staff report
