RADFORD CENTER SEES FIT FUTURE AHEAD

It may seem a bit unusual to find a public fitness center located in the middle of an active Army installation, but that's exactly what the residents of the New River Valley will see when visiting the Wellness Center 114.

Then again, maybe the Radford Arsenal is a suitable backdrop for the Wellness Center 114, where, like the Arsenal, arms (as well as leg, back and shoulder) development is the objective.

Wellness Center 114, a division of Radford Community Hospital and Carilion Health System, offers members the use of cardiovascular, Hydro fit, and Nautilus equipment, free and universal weights, basketball and two racquetball courts and locker rooms equipped with saunas.

Facility manager Julie Wilkinson said that rates differ for some members because Wellness Center 114 offers discounts to Arsenal employees, employees of certain corporations, and students. Membership is open to all ages. The Wellness Center 114 requires a minimum six-month commitment and Wilkinson said all interested parties should call the center at 639-4949 for more information.

"The response from the public has been good so far," Wilkinson said. "The summer months are a difficult time to attract new members, but we really expect the numbers to pick up once the students at Radford and Virginia Tech return for the fall."

In addition to access to the gym's state of the art equipment, members may also take advantage of aerobics classes as well as consultations from the Wellness Center 114's certified personal trainer, Tom Nelson. Wilkinson said the center hopes to form basketball and racquetball leagues in the future.

CRC VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT: The Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center recently held its first "Spring Thaw Volleyball Tournament", where participants competed in two divisions: coed doubles and six person coed. Because of the large turnout, teams were required to advance through a series of preliminary rounds, culminating in a championship tournament sponsored by Bright Services, First National Bank and the CRC.

In the coed doubles bracket, Age Span defeated Spikes or Bust in the finals. Hunter Hancock and 13-year-old Lavanna Byler made up the winning duo and represented Virginia Tech's Communication Network Services. Kollmorgen's Dennis Galecki and Ann King comprised the runner-up squad.

Blacksburg High School volleyball coach Susie Schneider anchored the winning co-ed six person team, Fuzzy 2's. Other team members included Stefan Susta, Marshall Anderson, Mike Buchanan, Jennifer Buchanan and Carl Cirillo. The Fuzzy 2's defeated Me, You, Him, Her and Those Two - featuring Karla Kitts, Chris Geyer, Julian Cooper, Leandro Christmann, Bill Gragg, Janelle Bevins, Ray Page, Will Eyestone and Jan Lowe - in the finals.

DIXIE TOURNAMENTS: Area Dixie League baseball and softball teams begin tournament play tomorrow at Christiansburg High School, Christiansburg's Kiwanis Field and Dublin Middle School. Play will run through the middle of next week, with teams competing for a berth in the Virginia State Tournaments held in Grayson County and Bedford.

NRV teams competing include Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Giles, Radford, Pulaski County and the Town of Pulaski. For more information on game times contact Chuck Muncy, Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department Director, at 382-2349.
