FORMER VIRGINIA standout Jimmy Flippen heads VSGA Men's State Amateur qualifying.
Jimmy Flippen Jr. of Danville shot a 2-under-par 68 for a total of 138 Tuesday to win the qualifying medal in the VSGA's Men's State Amateur Championship for the second year in a row.
Twelve players did not finish their Tuesday round after a five-hour rain delay. Eight of those will finish play early today before the low 32 qualifiers begin match play. There will two rounds of match play today and two more Thursday before Friday's 36-hole championship between the two final survivors.
Flippen's round, one of only two sub-par rounds Tuesday over The Homestead's 6,566-yard Cascades course, took the spotlight away from Springfield's Scott Inman, a finalist the past two years. (Scores in Scoreboard. B4)
Inman shot a 2-over-par 72 for a 36-hole total of 141 and held the lead for most of the day.
Austin Eaton of Alexandria, who lost in the quarterfinals last year, shot a 69 for 144 and third place.
At 145 were 1994 runner-up David Brogan of Lexington and G.W. Cable of Oakton, who shared the first-round lead with a 68 but soared to a 77 Tuesday.
Tied at 146 is two-time former champion Keith Decker of Fieldale and John Miller of Sterling.
Pat Tallent of Vienna, the other first-round co-leader, soared to an 80 that included three double bogeys. He four-putted the 18th hole.
Thirty-three players are finished at 151 or better.
Roanokers Ryan Ketron (74-148) and Scott Hunter (75-149) qualified for match play, while Daleville's Andy Miller (73) is on the qualifying bubble at 151.
Roanoke-area players failing to qualify included: Josh Points (79-152); Mark Funderburke (73-155); Jeff Lynch (80-155); Wes Cothran (77-156); Bobby Clark (81-158); Ned Baber (83-159); Stewart Gillespie (80-161); Brian Agee (84-167); Brad Carter (77-NC); Nick Varney (80-NC); and Tony Montgomery (86-NC).
Defending champion David Partridge of Richmond also failed to make the cut, carding a second straight 76.
