JUSTICE REPORTING WINS AWARD

Laurence Hammack, who's been a reporter for The Roanoke Times 11 years, has received the 1996 Award for Journalism in the Field of Law and Justice, sponsored by the Virginia Press Association and the Virginia Bar Association.

Hammack's three-part series on juvenile justice was chosen over three other finalists in the category for newspapers with more than 40,000 circulation.

The Bar Association's executive vice president, C.B. Arrington, said Hammack's series "clearly examined problems within the community and the system, then went a step further to show some methods of dealing with the current situation."

Hammack received his award Saturday at the Virginia Press Association's TechVPA Conference and Trade Show in Virginia Beach.
