The wife of a Virginia community college president was found dead and her husband was hospitalized Tuesday in what police called an apparent murder-attempted suicide.
Police said the body of Kathleen Upton, 63, was found at the cottage on Lake Michigan where she spent summers with her husband, John H. Upton, president of Rappahannock Community College.
Allegan County medical examiner Dan Miller said the woman apparently had been struck with a blunt instrument. Police found her body on the floor near the back door.
Police interviewed her husband at Holland Community Hospital, said Saugatuck-Douglas Police Chief Bill Giles. Upton reportedly made the call to 911.
``It sounds like a murder-attempted suicide,'' Giles said. ``That's the way it looks.''
He said he thinks Upton took an overdose of medication. ``They pumped his stomach, so he'll be fine,'' he said.
A spokeswoman at Holland Community Hospital said Upton was in stable condition.
Upton, who is in his 60s, has been president of Rappahannock Community College since it opened in 1971. He and his wife have three adult children, said John Presley, Rappahannock's dean of instruction and student development.
