CRAFT, Jennifer Ellen, U.S.N. Petty Officer 3rd Class, 22, of Vinton, stationed in Naples, Italy, died Saturday, June 29, 1996. Jenny was born into the lives of Elmer and Chee-Chee Craft on September 9, 1973 in Roanoke, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Lynn Phillips. Jenny was a 1991 graduate of William Byrd High School where she was captain of the Girls' Softball and Basketball teams her senior year. Jenny took her first job with CMT Sporting Goods in Roanoke, Va. Jenny entered the Navy in September, 1992, and attended Recruit Training until November 1992 at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Florida where she was assigned to Company 1092, Division G. Upon completion of Recruit Training, Jenny was selected for initial assignment as a member of the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard Stationed in Washington D.C. While assigned to this prestigious unit, she participated in many significant events including the inauguration of President Clinton, the Funeral of President Nixon, the Middle Eastern Summit between Yassar Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin and the Retirement Ceremony of General Colin Powell. Upon her transfer from the ceremonial guard in September 1994, she attended Mess Management Specialist School in San Diego, California. While attending this school, she reenlisted in the Navy and was subsequently transferred to Naval Element, Allied Forces Southern Europe, in Naples, Italy where she worked in the Multi-Service Barracks and in Food Service Operations and provided support to Operation Joint Endeavor in Bosnia. While in Naples, Jenny was advanced to Petty Officer Third Class and contributed to the commissioning of a New Dining Facility, the U.S. International Troop Mess. She served in Naples from January 1995 until her death on June 29, 1996. During her two enlistments, Petty Officer Craft was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for her su perior performance of duties as a member of the Firing Party at the Nixon Funeral; Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, and the Overseas Service Ribbon, and numerous letters of appreciation for these events. She is survived by her parents, Elmer and Chee-Chee Craft; her sister and brother-in-law, Melissa Craft Tinley and Dale Tinley; her brother, Robbie Craft; her maternal grandmother, Geraldine Phillips; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer J. Craft Sr.; her great aunt and uncle, Conley and Ruth Harman; her uncle and aunt, Jimmy and Brenda Phillips; her aunts and uncles, Gaile and John Ashbury, Bettie and Pat Underwood, Donna and Johnny Conner, Janet and David Mabry, and Nancy Walker; numerous cousins, great-uncles, great-aunts and friends. A full military service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 1996 at Vinton Baptist Church with the Rev. William E. Hungate and Dr. William L. Ross officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton, Va. The family will receive friends Friday, July 5, 1996 between 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Jenny Craft Scholarship Fund at William Byrd High School.
DILLON, Elsie Mae James, 66, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, July 2, 1996. She is survived by two sons, Lewis Frank Dillon Jr, of Boones Mill, John Fitzgerald Dillon, of Roanoke; two daughters and son-in-laws, Linda D. and Bill Martin of Roanoke, Donna M. and Cottie McClure of Villamont; granddaughters, Tracey, April, Loree, and Lacy; grandson, Frank; one great-grandson, Zachary. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 5 1996 at 10 a.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with the R everend Carl V. Woody officiating. HALE, Blanche Frances, 66, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 1996 at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison Sr. and Blanche Hale. She was baptized and grew up in the Mount Zion A. M. E. Church of Roanoke. She was a retired business teacher in the Roanoke City Sch ools. Approximately 7 years of teaching career was spent in Madison and Walnut Cove, N.C. Survivors are three sisters, Gwendolyn Hale, Roanoke, Serena Reeves, Bridgeport, Conn., Barbara Fultz, Winston-Salem, N.C.; three brothers, Harrison (Janice) Hale Jr., Henry Hale Sr., and David Hale; adopted son, Henry Hale Jr. all of Roanoke; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and many other relatives and friends. HALL, Colleen R., 63, of Richmond, formerly of Roanoke, departed this life Tuesday, July 2, 1996. She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Hall; a son, Anthony Lee Hall; a daughter, Debra Hall Gray; and son-in-law, Barry D. Gray; her two little sweethearts (grandchildren) Megan E. Gray and Daniel H. Gray; her mother, Effie Womach; her brother, Jack Robertson; her aunt, Pauline Lucas; other aunts, nieces and nephews.; sister-in-law, Virginia Cannaday; and brother-in-law and his wife, James E. HATHCOX, Clarence Becton, (``Hassy''), 66, of Roanoke, formerly of Bossier City, La., died Monday, July 1, 1996, at the VA Medical Center in Salem, following a long struggle with dementia. Mr. Hathcox was born in Natchez, Miss. and grew up in Baton Rouge, La. He was a retired USAF Master Sergeant with 27 years service. He also was a retired agent from the Shreveport, La. office of New York Life Insurance Co. Prior to his illness, Mr. Hathcox operated a private insurance brokerage business. Active in civic affairs, he was a long-time member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Shreveport, La. Association of Life Underwriters, and was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner. Surviving are his wife, Cathy Brizendine Hathcox, Roanoke; father-in-law, Sydnor W. Brizendine Jr., Roanoke; a daughter, Charlotte Brizendine Hathcox, Roanoke; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa H. and John Tidwell, Bossier City, La.; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin A. and Sandy Hathcox, Shreveport, La.; two grandsons, John Becton Tidwell and Steven Russell Tidwell, Bossier City; one granddaughter, Amanda Beverly Hathcox, Shreveport; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph C. and Evelyn Hathcox, Port Allen, La.; a sister, Katherine E. PENDLETON, Hazel Smith, of Blue Ridge, went to be with her Lord, on July 3, 1996 at 3 a.m. in her home. She wa s a member of Colonial Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Lionel W. Pendleton; one son, Ronald W. PETERS, Melvin L., (``Pete''), 66, of 737 Greenwich Dr., N.E., Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 3, 1996, in a Roanoke hospital. He was a member of the Ninth Street Church of the Brethren and American Legion Post #248. He was retired from the Chesapeake Corporation. Surviving are his wife, Anna Reed ``Sue'' Peters; two brothers, Marvin G. Peters, Roanoke, James A. Peters, Smith Mountain Lake; a brother-in-law and his wife, Jessie B. and Nancy Reed, Virginia Beach; a number of nieces and nephews. PETERSON, Betty D., 63, of Salem, died Tuesday, July 2, 1996 in a Salem hospital. She was a wonderful dedicated mother. She is survived by her mother, Hazel Ratliff; her children and their spouses, David and S usan Peterson, Lynn and Sam Mason, Sydney and Mike Robertson Sr.; grandson, Michael Robertson Jr.; brother and sister-in-law, Albert ``Junior"" and Beverly Davis; cousins, Linda and Dixie Runyon and Phyllis Haga; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Helen Darocha and Nell Brown. Her life was devoted to helping others and to many acts of kindness. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Friday, July 5, 1996 at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel, Salem. WILLIAMS, Mary Graham Buchanan, 77, of Abingdon, died Wednesday, July 3, 1996, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Chilhowie and lived in Crawfordsville, Iowa, for 45 years before recently living in Abingdon. She was a member of the United Church of Crawfordsville, and a former secretary at Blue Ridge Glass Corporation in Kingsport, Tenn. She was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., honor graduate of National Business College in Roanoke, and a 43-year member of The Wednesday Study Club in Iowa. She was the widow of Wayne R. Williams. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Ben W. (Florence) Clark of Saltville, and Mrs. Pete (Louise) Hope and Mrs. Sue B. Clark of Abingdon; two brothers, Wilson R. Buchanan Jr. and George W. Buchanan of Chilhowie, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Graham Buchanan Williams will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. William J. Youmans officiating. Burial will be Monday in the Crawfordsville Cemetery, Crawfordsville, Iowa.
