Brian Sowers Day set for July 13

A fund-raising committee for Brian Sowers' medical expenses will sponsor Brian Sowers Day July 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Vinton War Memorial.

Sowers, a 17-year-old Patrick Henry High School student, died June 6 following an undiagnosed illness. The family had no health insurance, and his father was recovering from recent heart surgery.

The event will include crafts, music, food, games and a dunking booth.

Woman's Club offers $250 scholarship

The Botetourt Town and Country Woman's Club is seeking applicants for its $250 scholarship.

Women age 22 or over who are residents of Botetourt County, hold high school diplomas and plan to attend a Virginia college or university to study education are eligible.

Golf tournament benefits ALA

The third annual Lang Father and Son Golf Tournament to benefit the Southwest Area office of the American Lung Association of Virginia will be held on July 27 at Countryside Golf Course.

New support group for hard of hearing

SHHH, or Self Help for Hard of Hearing People, has formed a Roanoke area group that meets the second Saturday of each month at the Roanoke City Library, 706 S. Jefferson St., from 2:30 to 5 p.m.

Star City SHHH promotes affiliations among people with hearing loss, their friends and families and health-care professionals. The group also educates adults and children on the nature, causes, complications and remedies of hearing loss.

Walk for the Cure on Sept. 29

The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation's eighth annual 10K Walk for the Cure will be held Sept. 29. There is no entry fee.

Walk Day registration begins at 9 a.m. on the Roanoke City Market; the walk begins at 10 a.m. An after-walk lunch will be held at Crestar Plaza.
