The state champion Roanoke Star 13 and under boys soccer team was eliminated in the third game in the Region I playoffs last weekend in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
The Star played its first game on Saturday at Fort Niagara Park. They drew the defending regional champions from New Jersey, and lost 2-0.
The next round on Sunday proved to be different for the Star. Raymie Equi scored two goals, while Matt Dishner added one to clinch a 3-1 victory over New York West.
The final game for the team was against this year's regional champion from Delaware. The Star lost, 2-0.
The playoffs included 240 teams of both boys and girls from 15 states in age divisions from 13 to 20. An Olympic-style parade before an estimated crowd of more than 10,000 at the University of Buffalo kicked off the event.
Region I draws state champion teams from the Northeast. In each division, the winner of the first round of four games advances to the final four playoffs.
The state victory by the Star marked the first Virginia Cup championship ever by a Southwest Virginia team.
