MODEM BOOT DOESN'T MAKE 'DIGEST'

The Blacksburg Electronic Village has been written up in more than 100 newspapers and magazines, including Playboy, Esquire, The New York Times and USA Weekend.

Now it can add one more: the July issue of Reader's Digest, which boasts 27 million copies sold worldwide each month.

Actually, the Digest article, billed on the cover as "The Most Wired Town in America," is condensed from February's USA Weekend article by David Diamond. It has several color photos, including one of the Clark Gaylord family with its newest addition, Cameron, whose birth was announced in December on BEV's electronic bulletin board.

It also provides word glimpses of computer use from Bogen's bar and restaurant to the Blacksburg branch library, and generally touts the success of BEV. But it does not contain the latest BEV news, that residents not affiliated with Virginia Tech must find other modem pool providers by this month and joined some other commercial Internet provider.
