Cepada Renaldo Wiley's brother called him from the office of a Melrose Avenue motel Thursday morning and asked him to come right over because the ex-boyfriend of the caller's girlfriend had forced his way into the couple's room.
When Wiley arrived at the Embassy Inn shortly after 10 a.m., he found his brother fighting with the ex-boyfriend on the sidewalk. Police said witnesses told them Wiley pulled out a handgun and "fired more than one shot ... until the victim was no longer able to move."
The victim, Jesse Darnell Ferguson Sr., 22, of Roanoke died at the scene.
Wiley told police he shot Ferguson and later identified a gun authorities found lying on the trunk of a car as the weapon he used.
Wiley, 22, who lives in the 3100 block of Keene Street Northwest, has been charged with murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held at the Roanoke City Jail without bond.
Wiley's brother, whom police would not identify, was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. After being treated for injuries he received when thrown against a motel window, he was released. Police also would not give the name of the brother's girlfriend.
The victim's family could not be reached for comment, but a funeral director said Ferguson is survived by two children.
