BOND DENIED FOR COLLEGE PRESIDENT

A Virginia college president charged with murder in the death of his wife at their summer home along Lake Michigan was denied bond in an initial court appearance.

John Upton, 64, acknowledged the charge against him Wednesday but otherwise was silent during the proceedings. His attorney described him as a ``pillar of the community'' and asked a judge to set bond, but Allegan County District Judge Gary Stewart declined and ordered Upton to jail.

``Kathleen Upton was struck, beaten and killed,'' prosecutor Fred Anderson said. ``The fact that he is a pillar of the community doesn't change the charge here.''

Kathleen Upton's death and her husband's arrest have stunned family and friends in Michigan and Virginia, where he is president of Rappahannock Community College. |- Associated Press
