The Narrows Police Department has received a $3,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles for traffic safety efforts.
The department will use half the money to buy a hand-held radar unit. The rest will pay police officers who work overtime checking for drivers under the influence of alcohol.
"We were seeing an increased number of DUI arrests," said Sgt. Scott Craig in a press release. "But we know that we are still missing even more, and with a lack of local funds with which to pay overtime, we applied to DMV."
The department will determine when and where the most DUI arrests are made in Narrows. Based on the analysis, officers will be assigned to those days and locations. The $1,500 will cover about 100 hours of overtime pay.
The hand-held radar unit will enable police to enforce speed limits in locations that were previously awkward or even impossible to use a vehicle's dash-mounted radar unit. The unit can be carried by an officer on foot and quickly maneuvered to point in any direction.
